Show ENTHUSIASTIC YES A Uorrespondent Who is Bent on the Canal SALT LAKE CITY April 3 80 Editors Herald The question with faraaeing stetss men H not what baa been accomplished accomp-lished but what can we do in order t promote the interests of the corn monwealihby increasing its strength its beauty its happiness and abiding dominion The wisdom and energy of u nation are disclosed in its public works and their adaptability to the collective and individual rrquire mente of its citizens The projected canal is a praiseworthy undertaking oacause it is a peoples necessity anil calculated to benefit every citizen in thn rnnrsa nl f limfl Such a crest and i laudable mcnaure however D must be carried into effect at once to benefit tbo greatest numbar of honorable voters in the affirmative cud also in the negative if any there be so that the greatest satisfaction may ba given t3 the greatest number of taxpayers and also of nontaxpayers OB our fellow citizens the poor holding equal privileges with the rich in this wise economy and universal law In developing de-veloping the resources of the country the poor will become rich The person per-son with a good supply oi water is in duty bound by the ordinary prompt ings of his nature to help his neighbor neigh-bor to the same blessing It is a beautiful principle when developed into practice To live and help live It is tho duty of the parents to provide i pro-vide for the children The time is 1 not far distant when we shall need all the City Creek water for domestic use and manufacturing purposes Our city waterworks will be extended to the remotest parts of the citymuch to the health and convenience of every householder Reservoirs will be built for this purpose We shall want all tho canal to irrigate our city lots to produce choice fruits nnd wellmatured vegetables shade trees and beautiful odoriferous plants and flowers to strengthen the physical system and gladden iUi five senses There is untold wealth in this canal I would suggest the expediency of securing the land by purchase if possible pos-sible from the government of the United State oer which the freshwaters fresh-waters of Utah Lake roll in gentle i waves Avoid all chances for litigation litiga-tion it is so expensive and exasperating exasperat-ing A wise man foreseeth the benefits bene-fits to accrue from pursuing a farseeing far-seeing and peaceful policy Drive a nail in a sure place Tap the Utah Lake at once The firtt cost will be the least In the end Utilize the water as much as possible If it can be brought along to Fort Douglas bring it by all means and let Uncle Sam enjoy the benefit of a salubricus climate The ladies would like to I improve their lawns and flower gardens gar-dens To give universal satisfaction the water will have to be brought away upup on the bench to bless the Twentyfirst and Twentieth Wards of the city it will make the people completely com-pletely contented supremely happy Taxes will be willingly paid There is no poetry in the word taxes but there is in the words canal strawberries straw-berries flowers to every husband and to every wife Plenty of water will make home a paradise a Garden of Eden out of the desert Think it over voters I Think Water for the lot and field water we must have to drink Lets vote Yes and never yield In the coarse of time ws shall become a great people in our public works Wo shall build an embankment around Utah Lake and EQ husband all the water if necessary now running run-ning in tho River Jordan to Sat Lake six months in the year unutilized i un-utilized Every aere of land under the shadow of the east and west moantains will be irrigated where the canal waters will rise high enough to do it There will be no laca of water EO none need fear on that account there will be enough water for al All great and progressive people in all ages have erected waterworks water-works we must build ours for they are an absolute necessity It will be wisdom to evade Old Water Rights with his great claims and many hint Avoid penurious economy Let net the hollow exist ence of old excavations have weight not in the least Excelsior I The idea may prevail to utilize the old canal resist the temptation The jreatett good to the greatest number num-ber Vex populil I I have plenty of wafer but I shall vote a solid yes I My neighbor wants water at present Future generations will need water The liberal eoul shall be > made fat Vote yes and prosper prosperINDEX |
