Show The Last Spike Word was telegraphed here yesterday yes-terday that the last spike on the Denver and Rio Grande Railway had been driven in at 4 oclock precisely pre-cisely yesterday afternoon Notwithstanding Not-withstanding all that has been said about it notwithstanding the repeated re-peated assertions that the road would never be completed and notwithstanding not-withstanding the efforts made to reduce the stock in the market despite all these influences the little road is at last built and in a few days it will be open to the public The event is one of as much importance im-portance to Utah as to Coloradoin lact it is of vastly more importaace for the reason that it is a new outlet out-let to Utah products east and while theCentennial state has already competing com-peting lines Whatever view maybe may-be taken of this event it is certain to be a vast benefit to Utah for the reason that it will open up a new a grand and a productive country which is bound to be a valuable tributary to any outlet and there is no question that benefits from this source will be immediately felt but whether merchants or others will derive any particular advantage from the new road is a conundrum While a reduction in freight and passenger rates might be desirable any radical changes would result in certain disaster to business men lt will be a matter for time to decide de-cide whether any benefit in the matter mat-ter of freight will be derived from the completion of this additional railroad here The publichowever will rejoice over the event |
