Show A WHITER in the current issue of the North American Review treats on that subject of perennial agitation agita-tion the annexation of Canada to the United Statesand gives five reasons rea-sons why the union should occur 1 A larger ma rket for Canadian products distrust of the future the progress of the country has I been slower than that of the United States 8 the increase of expenditure expendi-ture and debt The former was 13600060 in 1868 and 32000000 I in 1882 with no increase of population The debt in 1867 was 75000000 and In 1881 155000060 The remaining reasons are embodied in the lack of increase of population and a desire for a republican government gov-ernment No one can deny that the rapid tendency of Canada is toward annexation and it is questionable if the imperial government is very anxious to retain its broad dominion do-minion in America But if Great Britain should object to the United States receiving its northern neighbor neigh-bor and cutting it up into states the objection could amount to nothing noth-ing It is predicted that within the present generation this country will take Canada in out of the cold and it is quite probable that the British will be glad to get rid of her ungrateful un-grateful and expensive colony |
