Show RACES The Proposed May Promises Prom-ises of a Big MeetSalt Lake as a Place for Speed There is no longer any doubt that a racing meeting of about five days duration will take place here during next May The time settled upon has been singularly fortunate A meeting is arranged to take place at Denver about the 1st of May and about a week later one at Pueblo This will give western sportsmen and those within reasonable distance east time to attend both while the meeting here taking place the last of May gives these parties ample opportunity to reach Salt Lake to take part in the races here while the money that will be offered in purses is certain to be a sufficient inducement In addition to this about this time stables of horses will be on their way from California east and those in charg will naturally desire to stop off at Ogden and give their horses a rest Consequently three or four California Califor-nia stables of from three to six horses each will be in attendance It is almost a certainty that there will be a much larger attendance than at the meeting here during last June and Julyboth in the trotting and running races while there are now here a large number of horses Mr Matt Allen has four running horses Mr Pierce has a stable of five runners Mr Charles Carrington has a trotter trot-ter a pacer and a short distance running mare there are other trotters while Mr J T Gil mer and Mr E J Travis always manage to keep here bOth trotters and runners There are here today to-day less twentyfive or thirty horses which will be entered in some of the races and several in a great many This is quite a nu cleusand with the condition of racing rac-ing affairs as above stated there is scarcely a question that the proposed pro-posed meeting will be a great success suc-cess every way Another item in this connection that is not generally known is certainly cer-tainly deserving of publicity People Peo-ple here must not allow themselves to entertain the idea that races here are scrub or indifferent affairs It is true that in trotting the time here has been comparatively compara-tively uninteresting as compared with performances east and west but m running nowhere in the I world during all last years races was there a better average of time made than during the June and July races here Some of the running run-ning was actually phenomenal and the amounts put up OB m itch races was unusually hgh 4 < Ben Ander sons half mile dash against Euchre was simply remarkable remark-able while the exhibitions of speed made by Pearl Jennings Red Boy and many other horses were such that anyplace any-place could point to them with pride It is a fact that the average 1 av-erage of the time made in running races lere last June and July was a long way ahead of that made s It > any other place in the United States during the tame year and this goes i to show that not only wore the horses here the equal ol those to be found anywhere but Salt Lake is a splendid country for running horses The meeting here last year was an initial one and it wag a matter ot surprise that the first should have been as near paying as it was With the experience gained last year and the opening of a new racing rac-ing locality and the purses to be given should b advantageous to al horsemen anu should encourage avery I a-very general attendance as it unj J 1 doubteJly will of course Shese race meets are an advantage to the city they bring a great many persons here who spend a great deal of money in consequence conse-quence of which many persons are anxious the meeting should take place and have expressed a willing I ness to contribute to the expenses andto guaranteeing the purges The I mere mention that such men as J T Gilmer E J TravisMulloy and I Paul Matt Allen Clasbey Hogle are interested is all the as surautfe that persons can desire but as it is common to have a purse made up by hotel men one by merchants mer-chants another by saloon men another by citizens and so on in order or-der that all may contribute to the excellence of the races as all are more or less benefited by them and sis many have expressed a desire de-sire to forward the proposed May races by contributing to thir success suc-cess in a pecuniary way it is proposed pro-posed to give all an opportunity Iii is thought business men generally will give a bout 86500 to the enterprIse enter-prIse which done others will makeup make-up the amount to 10000 which distributed during five days will make any number of fine purses The proposition is a splendid one and no d oubt advantage w ill betaken be-taken of it |
