Show TELEGRAPHIC Railway Time Convention Chicago nThe annual railway timetable i time-table convention began here this morning and is being attended by representatives from nearly every important railway in the country In addition to arranging winter time tables it is proposed to take definite action on the adoption by railroads rail-roads throughout the country of the proposed pro-posed plan for uniform time standards Tbe new plan has been termed the hour system It provides for standards differing dif-fering from each other by exactly an hoar leaving out the eastern and western extremes of the continent there are eastern east-ern central and mountain times The first will be employed from New Bruiswick to the meridian of Detroit the sscond afar a-far west as the boundary between Knias and Colorado and the third line between Utah and Nevada It is proposed that all railroads now using Boston New York Philadelphia Baltimore Toronto Hamilton or Washington time as a standard shall be governed by eastern I or 75th meridian time four minutes I slower than NewYork meridian Roads now using Columbus Say nnah Atlanta Cincinnati Louisville IndianapolisChi cago Jefferson city St Paul or Kansas city time shall be run by the central or 90th meridian time nine minutes lower than Chicago time Minneapolis St Joseph Galveston Houston and Omaha time west of this road to be run by mountain time or exactly that of Denver It is stated the eastern district dis-trict standard time has been used by all roads between Boston and Montreal since last Sunday with the possible view of first testing the plan Mr P P Wright general superintendent superin-tendent of the L S M S was called to the chair and W F Allen wu chosen secretary Number of delegates present sixtythree The secretary announced that he had received affirmative replies from the managers of 78000 miles of track to the proposed uniform schedule The following was submitted and adon ted Where The managers of 78000 miles of road have voted in favor of adopting the system of time standard at the last convention we hereby pledge ourselves to adopt the same and run twins by it whenever the next schedules go into effect The only roads voting against the proposition pro-position were the Michigan Central Detroit De-troit Lansing Northern and Detroit Grand Haven Milwaukee The reason given by the former was that it crossed a meridian and could not adapt its running run-ning arrangements to the naw plan at present Without great inconvenience It was stated in the con nUon that tie road ini question would soon adopt the new schedule It was decided that the present schedule should remain in force until November 18th when new schedules sched-ules will go into force The secretary read a communication from Commodore Shufeldt in charge of the naval observatory ob-servatory at Washington in which he congratulates the convention upon the change contemplated and said that while he thought single standard would be better from scientific point of view he thought the present change a long stride in i the right direction Commodore Commo-dore Sbufeldt prdmised the cooperation of the naval observatory in carrying out the policy of the convention He said the observatory would change the time of the dropping of the New York ball to the mean time of the seventyfifth meridian and in addition would endeavor en-deavor to secure its adoption to local lime in the whole section in which it is to be used for railroads The observatory would tarnish the time of the seventy fifth and ninetieth meridian to railroads hrongbout tha entire country daily J K Edmunds in charge 01 the Boston Bos-ton observatory telegraphed the convention con-vention as follows The city the railroads and the observatory only await the affirmative vole of the convention before fixing the date for changing all public time in Boston The convention adjourned for the day at 2 pm |
