Show THE PEOPLES PROBLEM Mr Albert Btickney contributes to the July number of Scribners an article entitled The Peoples Problem Prob-lem In twelve pages he tells ua what we all knew before that the people no longer have control of the government It ia managed by a machine His last paragraph propounds pro-pounds the query Is there any remedy And can it be found There is no doubt as to the answer to these questions The people made this government and will yet find a remedy for its faults But the remedy rem-edy is not to be found by standing still or by saying that nothing can be done In the next paper an attempt at-tempt will oe made to give the outline out-line ef a remedy We shall await with the eame curiosity we always entertain regarding the remedies of empirical philosophers the development develop-ment of Mr Stickneyn plan and we must confect thai our faith is nut any greater than it has been in times past The people made thn government govern-ment Thai is emphatically true The people who made it were those who had an interest ic it and BO long as they kept what they bad made there was no political danger But when party spirit became rife and party usurped the place of patriotism patriot-ism when for the sake of obtaining votes for our party the holders of the eacred trust committed to their charge by those who fought to obtain itJ surrenaered it to be torn to pieces by the hyenas of universal suffrage the strongest of that pack took it in their teeth and nON bold it with a grip that cannot be loosened They of all voters will nol he the ones to vote back the advantage they have obtained Will Denis Kearney release it from his throne in the sand lots Will the negroes of the south give back again their right to vote away the white mans property Wbat is your remedy Mr Stickney A property qualification qualifica-tion Will men who have no property vote for that A literary qualification Will those who can neither read nor write support it These are the questions to be answered belore the remedy whatever it may be is proposed pro-posed |
