Show LICKED The Olympics Lose the Championship Champion-ship By a Score of 20 to 3 Thursday was an exciting time for those interested in the diamond field Washington square was largely patronized the grand stand was filled the open space to the left of the ground contained the usual crowd and hundreds of heads peeped over the fences on the outside out-side It was anticipated that the game being the final one in the contest con-test for the Territorial championship champion-ship would be better played and more exciting than any ot the preceding pre-ceding four But disappointment is the lot of mortals and a loc ot mortals were disappointed Poor batting careless fielding and lack of enthusiasm seemed to characterz the actions of the home team from the start while the reverse marked the playing of the Athletics The Bait Lakers went to the bat first Gelding using the bat he got out at first when Alex Watson struck the ball a lefthanded swipe driving it to right field and taking his third on it This woke up a brief ourst of enthusiasm which was maintained until after Barker hit the sphere to right field bringing in Watson Barlow and Bess score I nothing Graves began for the Athletics he got first on a good striker A Allen sent a daisy twobases out and trought Graves in Browning batted Allen home and Stanford got his first on an error byDunbir SAllen I went to first on balls as did Parsons i and the bases being full Browning got home that made at this point a series of errors let in Stanford Stan-ford Allen Parsons and Reed and nn nnn nut VAt Wricht and Bovle struck out 01 when Graves went to I the bat the second time and got his first A Allen followed with a threebase hit bringing in Graves the second time when Browning hit a fly to Morris and put the side out Score 8 to 1 In the second inning the Olympics Olymp-ics were whitewashed and the Athletics made four more runs out of bad fielding on the part of their opponents Score 12 to 1 Golding tok his second on a nice leftfield hit in the third inning when Barker struck and brought him home giving them another run S Allen and Browning scored one each in this inning making the score 14 to 2 Bess tallied one in the fourth inning in-ning while the Athletics went out with a cypher Score 14 to 3 The fifth inning was a whitewash white-wash for the home nine and a run each for Browning and Stanford of the Tinting club Score 16 to 3 It was thought in the next inning in-ning the sixth that the city boys I would turn in and retrieve their fortunes and indeed they made a show that way for Barlow started in with a stunning twobase hit and got his third on an error of Stanford Stan-ford but that was as far as he got A Allen for tho Ogdenites scored one making the record 17 to 3 Again in the seventh inning the osing side endeavored to rally but about this time a breeze sprang up and they began to realize that it was getting cold they were again whitewashed while S Allen increased in-creased the Athletic score to 18 to 3 Boyle and A Allen of the Victorious victo-rious nine scored one each in the eighth inning and a repetition of their score in the three preceding innings was put down to the Olympics Olym-pics 20 to 3 In the last inning the losers had become so demoralized that frequent calls for the third batter Morris failed to bring him to the home spot And so ended the poorest of the five gamespoorest so far as the Olympics were concerned but very well played on the part of the winners win-ners The score was as follows Inxos 123456789 Athletics 84202112 20 Olympics 101100000 The umpire acted as though he was not very familiar with the duties of that position though his decisions were generally acknowledged acknow-ledged to be fair Stricter regulations were noticeable notice-able in the management of the crowd as better order prevailed than on any previous cccasion |
