report which on motion was accepted by the unanimous vote of the Conference SALT LAKE CITY U T April 5 1884 President John Taylor and Counselors Counse-lors and the Officers and Members Mem-bers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in General Conference Assembled The undersigned your auditing committee respectfully represent that we have carefullyexamined all the annual exhibits books accounts reports and vouchers belonging to the office of the Trustee in Trust for the year ending Dec 31st 1882 submitted to us to abdlt and inspect in-spect and have satisfied ourselves of their correctness Respectfully submitted by yeur brethren in the Gospel FRANKLIN D BIOHAKDS WILFOED WOODRUFF ERASTUS SNOW Jos if SMITH VY3i JENNINGS He then read from the Book of Mormon the 29th chapter or II Kephi as far as the 10th verse inclusive in-clusive and showed how remarkably remark-ably the prophecies in this and preceding pre-ceding chapter likewise the one following had been and were being fulfilled since the translation of the ancient recorde by the Prophet Joseph The Book of Mormon contained con-tained within itself the evidences of its own divinity It was impossible I that Joseph Smith or any other man uninspired of God could have foreseen and foretold what the Book of Mormon had told in great plainness plain-ness and minutenesss concerning the i present and future If the claims of Joseph Smith to being a prophet rested solely upon the words of Nephi in relation to the effect the translatIon of the Book of Mormon would have upon the Christian world who had crisd We have got a Bible and there cannot be anymore any-more Bble that claim would be proven good for no man uninspired unin-spired could have had any such conception of what would follow It was supposed then as now by the Gentile world that the Indians were a perishing race and it would be impossible to save them but here was the word of God arrayed against such opnions and asserlionsj and already it was commencing toe to-e fulfilled The Gentiles who had received the gospel were now as Latterday saint carrying it to the Lamanites some of whom had gladly receive it and after the Gentiles as a nation had rejected it as it was feared they would they would receive it in greater numbers He quoted the woras of the angel to Nephi concerning the Church of the Lamb and that of the devil the onlv two churches that could exist and showed that what was said concerning them had been partly fulfilled in the history and experience ex-perience of this church as opposed and persecuted by the churches o the world He then read the list words of Moroni exhorting all to whom the Book ot Mormon should come to ask God in the name of Jesus Christ for a testimony of its truth and it should be given them and asked for the sentiment of the congregation as to whether they had in this manner received a knowledge know-ledge of its truth The vast assembly assem-bly responded yes as with one voice PRESIDENT JOSEPH F SMITH referred to the Doctrine and Covenants Cove-nants as containing many indisputable in-disputable eridenccs of the divine mission of Joseph Smith It would not be long before the world would be subdued under Gods feet and Satan knew this i better than many who profess to I have that knowledge It was no wcuder the wicked raged it was only surpiising that there should be a L iterday Saint not as fully awake to his work as Satans emissaries emis-saries were to theirs It was griev ions to think that there should exist any need for reformation In the midst of this people It was fifty four years since the gospel and the Book of Mormon were placed before > be-fore the world and though no stone had been left unturned to prove them a delusion and forgery their truth had never been and never could be disproved In conclusion he made sn appeal to the missionaries mission-aries They should be willing to go to any place they were sentGreat Britain the Southern States the Sandwich Islands or anywhere else He knew a gifted man who apostatized aposta-tized because he was called to go to the Sandwich Island instead of to amore a-more enlightened nation feeling that he was disgraced in being sent to preach to the heathen The speaker said he had always been thankful that he went there and so was Brother Cannonjwho wa now the First Counselor to the Presidency of the Church More apostles and bishops had been chosen from Elders who went to the Sandwich Islands in proportion to numbers than from those who went to England If a man wished to be exalted he must humble himself for if he exalted hinnelf God would abate him The choir sang I HoW beautiful upon the mountains Conference adjourned till 2pm Bendiction by Elder John Nut tall AFTERNOON SESSION The choir sang re-spective missions PRESIDENT JOHN TAYLOR then addressed the congegatlon He referred to the greatness of the tje work of God and showed its peculiar character n reaching into the eternities both past and pr sent s-ent while the works of men ended with time The ouside world were Ignorant of these glorious truths as Ignorant as the saints were before God enlightened them He dwelt I upon the mission of Elijah whom I Malachi foretold should precede the I coding of the great and terrible day of the Lori to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the ch Idren to the fathers lest the earth should be smitten with a curse After depicting the judgments of the great and terrible terri-ble day as shown by Isiah and other ancient prophets the speaker showed how Elijah had been sent and had conferred upon Joseph Smith the keys of his ministry as well as othera who had likewise appeared ap-peared for a similar purpose He showed that in building temples and baptizng for the dead the saints were carrying out the work the keys of which were bestowed by Elijah upon Joseph and were thereby preparing to be saviors uporr Mount Zion and to be perfected like Enoch and his city of od who were translated for their righteousness He showed how Satan was Interested in leading away the children of men how he he incited the billing of Abel the crucifixion of Christ and had always al-ways ea ployed what some men in our dsy termed heroic measures to destroy the work of God and put an end to His servants He portrayed the great mercy of God In Bending Christ to preach to the sprits in prison wh ch were disobedient in the days of Noah when the floods werE sent to destroy them and ex hortfd the Saints to be likewise merciful to those who sought their overthrow At the time the civil war broke out In this land he felt like weep ing for he had foreseen their troubles and they were not over yet Worse times were coming upon the nations than had yet been known But the Saints had a great work to do and must do it leaving their enemies in the hands of God who would deal out Justice and mercy to all No power could hinder the building up of Zion the gathering of the elect and the fulfillment of all God had dt creed for this the dispensation dis-pensation of the fullness of times The speaker counselled obedience aud fidelity to God and Hia work anJ called upon all who were willing to so live to say aye The response res-ponse was universal from the assembled multitude The speaker then blessed them in the name of the Lord Conference was adjourned till the 6th of October
