Show THE STEPHENS CONCERT 5 A Large and Enthusiastic Audience at the Tabernacle Taber-nacle Last Night p A Complete Success There was almost Patti audience at the Tabernacle to witness the great amateur concert All of the seats on the floor were taken and 1 the galleries were about half full Space will only permit of brief mention men-tion The entire programme was well rendered the children in the choruses and the varioub singers in solos and duette evidencing carefol trainin and doing full credit cre-dit to their teacher Mr Evan Stephens Little Sailor Jack a solo and chorus was very well given by Horace Ensign a boy of 10 The little fellow has a full clear voice and when not drowned by the dee tones of the organ was well heard by all The duet called The Photograph sung by Willie end Minnie Pardoe very much amused the audience and was encored as was the duet by Mi ses Mary Be sant and Louie Poulton entitled The Return of the Birds and composed by Mr Evan Stephens The AlpenJied a Swiss song and warble was admirably rendered by Mrs Sohoenhals and Mrs Grether The warble took one back to the Tyrol or to the ravines under Mount Pilatup where Swiss shop hardesses guard their flucks and warble like the Alpine birds They were loudly encored The Norwegian song by Miss Agnes Olsen was one of the features fea-tures of the evening She Bang with goad taste and on the high notes her voice was very sweet and clear Many of her lower notes wera drowned by the organ Without With-out meaning any ui icism but only as a suggestion it may be observed ob-served that Miss Olsen permits her body to sway from side to side when she sings and thus detracts much troui the effect of her singing It is a habiD common to amateurs but should ba discarded The song of the Sandwich Isiaauera was either the original or an im tation of the old eaten Jo ny Smoker It caused great mirth among the audience and was encored The character song called the Old Maid by Mr Stephens was well done ana met with a hearty en ore The remainder of the programme was performed by those already mentioned and the great multitude multi-tude at least 4500 in number went away well satisfied with their treat GOOD SUGGESTION Large as the audience was wfaicn assemoled in the Tabernacle Jast evening I think there was no one present who did not feel rejoiced at tbe concourse fmd wish that it could have ben three times heavier still That the popuarity of thee n cert bad been greatly aided by the fact that a sh re of the proceeds were to go to the B Y Academy is of course evident but the appearance appear-ance which greeted Mr Stephens appearances and each of his pro L 1 i UUillUllB LOU pieasanuy or ere goodwill good-will in which he wa held by the audience and th appreciation which is felt for his very arduous endeavors in tie musical cise I uoderjtand that Mr S ephns will B ortly give Up all nib classes and devote a year to sudy at tha Des eret University speading several wek3 this snmzner in seeking rest from hia past incas snt work Be foie he retire from a field in which I he r as conferred BO many benefits and lab red S3 unremittingly for the i i od of ot ers it would < eeoi only just that t he should receive soma demonstration of the esteem in which his efforts are held It would be a very grace ful thing if some of the choirs some or the Sunday schools and some of the numerous classes he has in eliucted and worked with were to unite in a general expression to their friend and teacher previous to his retirement No other musician that we know of has so just a claim for pubLc consideration and no one I think ciuld certainly command so general a rally to a rousing benefit DRAMATIC AND LYBIO III A j |
