Show ART AND ARTISTS 1 I Some New Work by Ottinger t Other Artists and Their Pictures Mr C Anderson has had at Cal ders a representation of the crater c f Kilauea Sandwich Islands as it appeared at night some three years ago As an attempt to show the shape and arrangement of a volcano it is interesting but we trust it was not intended as a work of art A bit of a leaf and flower drawi g copied ly him from the work of the well remembered Dahlgreen comes much nearer to art tM work Mr JohnTullidgt has been putting put-ting the finis ing llU2h i8 to one of the best picture he has lately done It i 4 called Parleys Canyon in Ssprmgtime and tells a beautiful beau-tiful tale of suul gIlt playing play-ing aong the mountain Bide and of the canyon sr am with its verdant bauke In the tender ten-der grays cf the stance this artist shows hio exceptional skill and we do not know of nny other wcr in which he has better led up to the controlling idea of his picture Mr Pratt has just finished a portrait por-trait of Mr Booth of GrautsviKe and n i now working on one of Mr Alfred Solomon of this city The real interest in art felt by Salt Lake people is often remarked A line in THE HERALD last Sundays Sunday-s that Mr Dallin would lecture lec-ture on art filled the Twelfth Ward schooihou Tuesday evening It is said that the bust of the late Brigham Young executed by Mr Harry Brown of Logan will shortly be on exhibition in this city The movement among the artists of this city to give an exhibition of their latest work has taken definite shape and they propose to make a disj lay about the middle of next ruon h The Intention of each is to contribute only a few of the best exam ex-am plea and we are sure the collection collec-tion will Chow a remarkable development de-velopment during the last two year The generou > offer of Mr D O Calder to let tht artists have the use of his fine fnow room for this purpose haa been accepted and nothing et > ndB in the way of giving anica exhibition A call upon Mr George M Ottin ger at his studo Jhowed him busily engaged on a Mexican subject which bids fair to be one of his sue cesafal pictures At present it can only Le judged by its po sibiJitie trusting to the artists perceptions to bring out the excellent points that are already mggf steel The story told is the recital before Mcn tezama by Papakzln of a dream in which she had seen the ships or the invading Cortez but which she thought was the coming of the cc fairgod or Christ With all the advantage cf his large exp ex-p rien e In similar works Mr Ot 4 u hnlil m eke a ood c t ore bLll Ul O1AU1U UJnu U g UUU JJly UlV of this > > He has his grea est opportunity oppor-tunity however in a canvas nearer completion entitled The Madonna Uoatlacua This repre ents the Mexican version of the legend of the immaculate conception and It very intereBting in its cimparieon with the Christian idea of the cr cum 51 an = e Although mot fdmpJe in treHmen the epic grandeur of this subjcrt is such that we com ineui it ti the artist as one of then the-n blest he hay yet projected and we trust he will not take it from his t ilII 1 un il he has bestowed upon it l1 r vxreme jesources of his mind i aLu pencil We see immense dim cutiS in iLe way He has to realize the features of a barbaric race suff ued with a divine rapture and these conflicting Rime are to be harmoniously depicted throughout the figure as well But fUlh ideal is worthy of infinite pains and will repay re-pay them Many other proofs of Mr 0 tingers study of Mexican ant an-t quitiea are to be seen in various stages of completion among the best being that of CoatI rescuing Madoc an episode taken from I Southeys poem r But we all know this artist is varied in his choice of eubjecte and numerous landscapes and marines attest his versatility 1 A beautiful picture of Oulton church Suffolk is one of the charming English pastorals that have lately jjroyed so popular Another a scene on the coast of Wales Carreg Cennin castle but this is by no means pleasing to us The distance is overloaded wi h incident in-cident which quite subordinates the grand cattle nsef and renders the foreground almost a blank A much more interesting work Is h spicture of the Wasatch mountains from a point near the old paper mill south of the city Thesnow clad range is under a subdued glow from the setting sun and a most poetic sentiment pervades the entire picture Bnt this artist has not done much better painting than in his marine called After the Battle which he has recently I i re-cently completed In the skillful ar uuiaenaent of 1ghfcand the excellent pose and drawing of the ships we saw what we Consider good work and there is no doubt that this picture pic-ture will always prove popular Altogether Al-together we felt well Repaid Wjth II our visit to this interesting studio I and are sure we see a development in Mr Ottingers power Mr Charles Auer has purchased the charming pastelle drawing by Mr Hafen that has been on exhibition ex-hibition at Savages This artist has just completed an excellent crayon portrait of Mrs M JBarratt and one of Mrs Watson MrKirkham has had a small pair of landscapes in Calders window this week He has not often excelled ex-celled one of them that showing a lake and a dark rocky point jutting against an evening eky Mr George Beard of
