THE HERALD block do you Well sir you shall be accommodated with plta ure it you will have the goodness to follow our guidance Perhaps a few prefatory pref-atory remarks however may not be nnnteresJDg THE HERALD was founded on June 5th 1S70 by Edward Ed-ward L Sloan nd William C Dunbar both of whom bad formerly been connected with the Telegraph the former a brilliant writerperhaps one of the beat the west has ever knownand the latter a close shrewd businessman business-man This was thought to be a good combination and then on September 1st of the same year it was strengthened by the addition ad-dition of Jahn T Caine to the proprietorship In 1874 a stock company was formed and THE HERALD incorporatea At the outset there were many who predicted pre-dicted failure and just what afal ure it has been I propose to sbow you this morning On June 5th then the first number was issued it being somewhere about halt the size of THE HERALD at present The office was located up stairs in the Old Constitution building Business Busi-ness extending the establishment was scan moved to more commodious commodi-ous quarters next to the old Des eret National Bank bh ck After it had beendecided to erect new buildings build-ings there THE HERALD again took up its materials and moved to the quarters on East Temple street lately vacated This was an improvement im-provement and for awhile the bulditg though not one of the most convenient aud elegant satisfied satis-fied to a great extent the necessity for more loom By degrees through filing up with new presses type and other adjuncts the building became be-came crowded end continued to be entiley inadequate to the demands But to obtain suitable ground for the erection of other quarters was the rouble now There wee plenty of p uces to bj ha 1 but nme offered advantages en ugh to make it an objac lotecure it At lase th comp com-p ny was fortunte enough to fur chase he pr sent site and ground was numeH tely broken for the bail tin ann her the ppculiar in Si dent occurred th it to make room for the new quarters buildings that hal 1 been erected b rODe of THE HERALDS foundersE L Sloau were pulled down Well t I suppose you are ready to commence the walk now Entering thenat the TilE COUNTING ROOM wound it to Ue a light airy clean and spacious apartment with the usual appurtenance nothing ra markable here or that you cannot see evey day elsewhere save the elegant t trek of stationery arranged secure from dust cr other dirt and the large glass cabinet filled with the best and most apt roved forms of legal blanks ef which wa have been making a specialty for yeu san s-an with which we have been very successful Fine wedding wed-ding goods and the more costly atationery are kept here that customers custo-mers can choose drectly from the stock That fjnnylooking object on the Fide wall rejemblin2 two elongated pigeon boxes is a dummy by which any communication communi-cation designed for the editors on the next floor may be sent and it saves patience and shoeleather to a great degree The four speaking tubes arranged in the wall connect respectively wtih the Editorial HOOOIP the Com osing Room the Job Dsptttrneni and the Bindery thus giving ifcBfcmtaneous communication com-munication with every part of the buJding These tortuous steps leaJ down into the JOB PRINTING PRESS ROOiT another light comfortable and spacious spa-cious place where all the press work connected with the Job Room upstairs up-stairs is done The presses fly dont they They are fed by nimble fingered boys and you would be astonished as-tonished sir at how expert the youths can become Looks easy enough did you say Yes it does but try it yourself and you will soon be mude aware of how easy it is not to feed them Here is more stationery lez upon piles of it everything from the finest to the very common paper of all sizes shades and colors That murderous loosing machine over there is a small cutter on which the smaller paper such es dodgers circulars etc prepared for the press Now we pt a thruh he and enter THE NEWS PBEI3 ROOM where THE HERALD is printed That machine is the large cylinder press and the auslyconstruated piece of machinery at this end is the folder cutter and paster this with the big wheel is the gas engine that furnishes the motive cower fcr the presses in both rooms Above you will notice the large amount of shafting required The large press is silent now and we must vieit it after awhile when the room will be lively enough Hereby the way is something we nearly overlooked and it is a very eential adjunct to the press room It is the eJevator leading up into the composing room and used only mp dveying the forms to and fro The machinery was made at the Silver Iron Works and placed in position under Mr Silvers personal enperviion It ia a very creditable piece of work indeed and is the best of the kind we have ever seen Throueh this dark narrow entrance en-trance we arrive at the ftsamheat ing apparatus an intelligent piec of mechanism more so than some men for the reason that it knows when it ha enough steam on and refuses point blank to take anymore any-more From this emanates the warmth necessary for the entire four floors of a building 100x30 feet UpstaT now and on the second flwr in the southeast corner we I find THE EDITORINCHIEF located in a very pleasant room one that commands an elegant view and has the sane chsracter Istci of the other apartments bright airy and cheerful In the corner next to the heavily loaded cookcase we s 9O the other end o t the ktJummj we noticed in the Counting Room below Adjoining this is the REPORTERS ROOM beadqiiarte7S of the city department Here we see another dummy this conveys copy to the compositor above speaking tube connecting is on the opposite wall Adjoining the Editorial Rooms ate several suites of elegant offices cleau and light and supplied with water steam and ga Some are now occupied oc-cupied and the others will be in tvie course of a few days VVe now acend another flight of stairs bnU through tiis hull walk into THE BINDERY probably one ot the most commodious commo-dious and beat appointed in the west Nimble fingered girls are seated along the tables sewing or stitching the leaves of the books Ito I together ready to be handed over to the forwarders This ia the ruling machine an elegant piece of furniture that forappearancewoul i grace any parlor it has only lately been purchased and set up and con tame all the laest improvements to date making it the most complete and best in the Territory and equal to anything in the west or east either for that matter The gentleman gentle-man who manipulates it is justly iroudTof U and handles it with care and solicitude With it can be done any and everv kind of ruling That can possibly be demanded It goes slow did you say Well yes in comparison with toe presses vre saw In he basement J but ruling is very delicate work and must be handled carefully Here on this sid is another species of guillotine the Acme paper cutter It is a ponderous affair is it not It seems 39 thouh there mght be a waste off of-f rce somewhere when it takes so much power to cut paper properly dossac it But the machine is easy of management does its work with lightning rapidity and is one of the most useful things in the room This little machine here worked by the young lady < s a pager with which the b aok books receipt books order backs certificate etc are properly paged over there 13 the machine for perforating checks ra ceipt etc anJ it works to a charm and this funny looking thing here is the round corner cutter used for shaping the corners of books Next comes the boatd l cutter and thfs is hydraulic press You will no tice several other machines but they are of minor importance Others are now on the road and will hortly arrive Here on these shelves is everything in the shape of lecher cloth etc that the most complete Bindery has any possible need of and the stcck is never slowed sl-owed to run down as in that case customers would probably never be able to find the style they desired One article this department makes a specialty of is ledger paper furnishing fur-nishing any and every style that can possibly be called for It would take too much of your valuable time to explain the uses of these hundreds of tools you see scattered about so we will pas on to the BOOK AND JOB ROOM the other branch of the department we rscently inspected in the basement base-ment This Mr Subscriber is where all the type used in the printing print-ing of bsoke pamphlets letterheads letter-heads card 1 and the one thousand and one different forms of printing coming under the head Job is Letup Let-up and prepared lor the presses below be-low Piled one above another in racks are the many different varie ties of types used in the business and a large and varied assortment it is In this department it is neces ary to keep abreast of the times and a3 a conssqenco it is found necessary to make new purchases of typa and other material very often The ingenuity of the typefounders is always taxed tots to-ts utmost capacity in this direction nnd 61iQ rivalry between the differ ent houses lend a spur to all An a csnseqience the intelligent printer ha a large field to choose from and he can readily select such C faces i as most readIly suIt his ratonr I I Among the many latejy added ia a font called the TypeWriter ba I ing a facFimilio of the typewriting type-writing of that laborhaving machine and ia moat unique and bandy for circularletters etc Improvements in Job Types are made eo rapidlyand with such gratifying success as to command the admiration of the members of the craft and there is no possible excuse now for the turning out of poor or botched work But it i 18 in this business as in all others there is a certain class of printer who start in r business for themselves them-selves with the sale object in vew of making something and they usually have a hard road to travel Finding thempelvea being pushed to the wall by older and better appointed establishment they resort to the nae of poor paper poorer ink and unskilled un-skilled and therefore cheap labor Talc they are compelled to do in order to compete in prioe with better houea The r cult is not at all gratifying to persons ot refined taste and even the more intelligent pttron is sometimes tafcen in us it ia exlromely difficult for anyone not throughly posted to I detect a difference in paper that varies 2 or 3 pounds to the ream Yet I the difference is there and in that diflerence lies a Dart of the profits of I I the snide concerns It has always been the motto of THE HERALD in this department as in all others to do the bpst work that can be done for the money and to make even the cheapest job look neat and tasty That we have suoceded in pleasing our patrons is evidenced by the large and increasing bu mess We wi i commence soon in these rooms tbe publishing of the UTAH GAZEIIEEE which when completed will give the nnhlin in rhia ountirtn nn lila nf nnr abilities that direction 01 This hall leaJg also to the COMPOSING ROOMS where our compositors are located and which without doubt has no peer in the west for light air space and general comfort and indeed we doubt verv much if it has a peer anywhere any-where Lighted by seven large win dews on the east and a uth and heated by two large steam radiators and with perfect ventilation it is ce tainiy a paradise for printers especially especi-ally when we consider how many papers pay go little attention to tho important department The coin positora you observe arc hera now but they are simply preparing for the nightd work doing a little skirmish inp so to speak before the nights battle begins which will be by 6 or 6 30 at the latest We will leave them now and call around this evening It is 10 p m now and the printers are at work in earnest in their regular uniformshirt sleeves their eyes protected from the light of the lamps by heavy brown paper shades It is quiet and still save fcr an GO casional racket produced by the copy bole reaching UB from the editorial rooms over there an occasional request re-quest for instruction from the foreman fore-man and iceaeant i click clickclick emanating from a dozen different framee as the types are placed in the sticks This tuba here gives communicAtion with the press room this goes to the counting room and the third one connects this department with the editorial rooms That little fellow there with tne dirty face and still dirtier hands Oh thats the devil the typographical Mephistopheles to be aesthetic Don t start he is perfectly harmless even though he loej assuma more ars than anybody in the eatabrshmant You dont see his horns Well that is quite natural He has an individuality sir and would acorn to pattern after anyone rot fcvsn after his namesake Ha runs the office on the same principle that a ballboy runs the hotel Being Be-ing Saturday night there ia extra work for the presser as we publish an extra heavy edition of ii pages in the morning SunJaY and the firat I forms ate already on the press below We will dsacacd and take a look at he tl PRESS SOOil BY GAS LIJHT Here wa are cind now a different t scene meets U3 than the one we encountered en-countered this morning The largo cylinder preas is fairly humming and how the papers fly The Otto engine seems to be doing its prettiest work I and tte great flywheel literally spins It is seldom sir that you have ever seen a neater piece of mechanism than that engine I am cure It is called The Silent and it ia well named no smoke no perpetual swish of escaping steam no dirt it is clean noisele and powerful and can be started or etbppail in 15 seconds 330 a mf and the last forms are on the press the foreman gives the word and the first sheet is placed in the iron fangs of the monster Before we get to the other side the paper will be perla ted and ready for the mailing clerk and carriers It goes in this end as you will perceive but partly finished and comes out at the other end printed pasted folded and the leaves l cut ready for perusal That folder cutter and paster is a wonderful machine is it not There ia a strange fascination about the work of the little thing and the precision and apparent ease with which it performs its important part in the preparation of the paper for I perusal at your breakfast table t I The paper is pnntet the compos1 eitora have bog eincedeparted7 and the pressmen are now hsisting ont the forma that have stamped their story on so many sheets They are carefully washed placed in the box I yonder a few turns of the big flywheel fly-wheel of the engine ani they are on the third floor ready to be remodelled for the succeeding i = eue The building build-ing is silent and de erted the pressmen press-men have gone bomD and we will follow their example |
