| Show MUNICIPAL MATTERS f SALT L KE CITY March 311883 Editors Herald The improvement of Liberty Park and the city squares is desirable no doubt But let us be moderate in our expenditures municipal and not go deeply into debt even for public parks or other pleasure grounds Too expensive or too elaborate designs for park improvements improve-ments should be rejected The things which are really desirable in the park are roads or walks trees grass and shrubs with decent fences and gates The roads or walks should be plain and few rather than intricate and numerous A lake is very well if sufficient water is reasonably rea-sonably available Fountains are excellent but in this city the water supply available for such purposes is very limited and the fountain business should correspond One thing however should be especially urged The old mill should not be torn down but restored so far as externals are concerned and should be ornamented with climbing Dlants ivy if it would endure the climate or more likely Virginia creepers and prairie roses Speaking of water every watercourse water-course large or small in the city that crosses the street should be bridged or flumed and that without with-out any unnecessary delay for the i sooner the better Not that it is either necessary or desirable to bridge or flume small streams all the way across thestreet all over the city If such were bridged or flumed for a distance of about twenty feet that would be better in many instances than it woul be to have them covered all across the street It is unpleasant for a carriage car-riage or buggy to cross open ditches in either summer or winter and it is unpleasant any kind of vehicle in winter though in summer wagon drivers may be glad of a chance to wet their wheels if not their whistles whis-tles If the ditches that cross the streets were flumed or bridged as above suggested and paved tbe remainder re-mainder of the distance the street in such a manner that a team could > n H n h 4Vnm onoilTT ip fVio uu ULuu n J u driver desired it would be perhaps the better plan A short flume or bridge is less liable to be seriously obstructed and to cause damaging overflow than a longer one and any overflow can be remedied much more easily and quickly with the former than with the latter All bridges especially high ones over large streams ought to have a substantial rail for a guard on each side The bridge on Fifth East steet immediately west oi Liberty Park is a creditable specimen of combined team bridge and footbridge foot-bridge with guard rails That bridge on the State Road just on the outskirts of the city should be served lu thcranmoTvajbj allracaua for that is a dangerous place and a good many people nowadays go along there and in the darkness of night too some of them in a condition condi-tion of begone dull care away exhilaration It would be better for the city to run itself live dollars in debt if necessary on account of these bridges and flumes than even on account of the park SALT LAKER I |
