Show ST GEORGE VS PIOCHE In a few tew days there will be due from the Commercial club of at Snit Salt Lake a re reply reply ply to the application of residents of Pioche Nov Nev wherein the latter re requested requested quested the Salt Laker to join with the Nevadans In urging the Salt Lake Route people to reconstruct their ran rail railway way line by way ot of Pioche instead of goIng vlaSt via St George Utah as desired and requested by residents of southern Utah In a way this put the Commer Commercial cial club In the line of choosing between interests within the state of Utah and Interests in Nevada where some Utah people are property owners Upon the merits of at the case the sU sit situation may be summed up thus The Tho Pioche people declare that the business arising from the mining industry there Is much greater than that arising from that which Is apparent on the more I southerly route while the S St George I people assert that the business coming I from an agricultural community such auch as cannot be created on the Pioche route and from the prospective min mineral eral development along the road both north and west of St G George orge will ina in ina a few years be vastly greater than ever can bo be anticipated from the Pioche section These are claims that must be passed upon eventually by the railroad people who have still other questions to consider Among the latter are the Increase in grade by way ay of st George where three per cent will be necessary In places and though this is less than is encountered by the Denver Rio Grande railroad In many sections It still Is an Important element In rail railway railway way operation also the further tact fact that the St George route Is slightly the longer That the building of at the new line Une by byway byway way of St George would greatly facilitate tate the development of that part of Utah Is beyond dispute and that such development would be of a permanent and profitable character as relates to tor r railway traffic Is equally certain For Forthe Forthe the Salt Lake Commercial club to take sides agaInst the adoption of this route would be to place It In the attitude of antagonizing the Important develop development development ment of at a large section of the state di directly directly tributary In Its trade relations to this city BesIdes the particular views of at the club upon the question at Issue If they were at variance with the judgment of at the railway people In ever everso everso so slight a degree would cut small figure In determinIng the result In this situation it would appear to be wisdom for the club to refrain from entering seriously Into a controversy where It would have little weight In the discus discussion discussion sion and none at all In the final de determination determination termination ot of the matter |
