Show POLICE CAPTURE DARING BURGlARS Trio of Bad Men Caught Red Handed in American House BURST OPEN OPEr THEIR DOOR SILVER STOLEN FROM HANAUER RESIDENCE IS RECOVERED Trapped as they were about to throw a hord of valuable silverware Into an ImprovIsed melting pot the who Saturday morning robbed the res resIdence residence of Mrs Irs L Hanauer 1111 East First street of plato plate valued at were arrested last night in a room I Ion on the upper floor of the American house bouse on Commercial street With the possible exception of a butter knife all of the Hanauer sliver silver was recovered ered in the arrest The burglars gave their names as T J JJ J 3 Howard aged 23 F E McCarty aged 38 and Tames James Hunt aged 28 Howard and Hunt have worked in vari various van vanous ous restaurants as walters waiters as near as the police can learn while McCarty Is Isdo isa do a cook They were arrested by Ser Sergeant Sergeant geant Henry Johnston and Patrol Driver er O 0 C Brown as the result of a clever scheme engineered by Lieuten Lieutenant ant John Hempel Early yesterday afternoon Lieutenant Hempel receIved information which al ai although i though of distant character threw Howard McCarty and Hunt under sus suspicion of at least being night prowlers or possibly holdups They had loitered about Commercial street exchangIng confidences which came to the ears of outsiders Lieutenant Hempel detailed a man outside of the police poUce department whose name is being withheld to shadow the trio Thieves Located Toward eVening Lieutenant Hempel began to receive word from the shadow that the movements of the trio had be become beCome come very suspicious and then came the information that they had a room somewhere In the American house The early investigations of the room in the hostelry developed little outside of evi evidence dence that the suspects were users of opium Loot hail had been very carefully hidden In the room A little later the shadow lost all track o the men He Heat Heat at once flashed the report to Lieutenant Hempel Just before 9 Hempel re received received a report from a man who gave his name as L E Galay of East Ehst Fourth South street that his residence had been robbed but that the burglars had been frightened away after securIng ing only a gold watch of small value The informant gave a detailed do de description of two of the burglars but was unable to tell much about the third When Hempel compared notes with the information he had received from his shadow the descrIption co Detectives and patrolmen were rushed to the scene of the robbery They reported that no robbers could be found With practically every man on the street Lieutenant Hempel called In Sergeant Henry Johnson who was of off duty and O 0 C Brown the driver of the patrol wagon detailing them to keep a close watch on the room at the American house which it was under understood understood stood had been occupied by the three men under suspicion Burst In Door Sergeant Johnston was about to rap on the door an hour and a half after the East Fourth South street robbery when the clink of silverware came to his ear He called Patrol Driver Brown With drawn revolvers John Johnston Johnston ston and Brown put their shoulders to the doot and sprung it wide open The burglars sprang to their feet and were about to reach for revolvers when the policemen ordered them to throw up their hands The burglars had been seated In front of a heavy iron kettle which contained a quantity of borax and had probably been Intended as a melting pot About them was strewn the silverware taken from the Hanauer residence A portion of the silver was still In gunnysacks None of It had In any way been in injured Injured but the presence of hammers and the melting pot indicates to the police that the burglars were about to convert it Into unrecognizable bullion The Hanauer silverware Is of English and Tiffany production beautifully en engraved engraved graved and bearing the Hanauer name and initials in practically every in instance instance stance The silverware was spread over the desks In the lieutenants office last night and Immediately recognized by the The Inventory reveals that but a single butter knife Is miss missIng I Ing IngIn In addition to knives forks butter spreaders spoons and slIver silver servIces of exceptionally heavy slIver and hand carved arved the recovery of the sto stolen stolen len goods Includes a heavy oval serving tray nearly three feet In length which has been carved by a master at en engraving engraving graving and which is held at unusual value by the |
