Show TO KEEP RIVER OFF THEIR lAN Provo Farmers and Others Take Steps to Clean Out the Channel Special to The Provo Jan has been more or orless orless less trouble from high water In Provo river every spring since the land along Its banks has been cultivated and this spring promises to be no exception A meeting was called In the court house yesterday which was well attended by people owning land along the riverbanks banks from the county bridge West which corn com prime the lowlands The meeting was presided over by Chairman Carter or of the city council committee on Irrigation The necessity for straIghtening the river channel raising the banks and removing sand and gravel bars In order to give the thu water a free flow to the lake was thor thoroughly thoroughly considered and the landowners agreed to give sufficient land where necessary necessary essary to make the river channel feet wide They also decided to commence the work at once The tocks rocks taken out will be crushed by the city rock crusher and hauled onto the roads west of the city County Will AId Mr Carter and other members of the city council and County Commissioner Ward assured the meeting that the city and county would render such help as could be legally given There was some talk ot of InvIting Salt Lake county and city to assist In strengthening the river on the theory that the water was a part of the water claimed by the Salt Lake people for Ir Irrigation irrigation but this Idea did not take a aCry avery very Cry firm hold on the meeting for the reason that the Salt Lake people would get the water anyway and one or of the speakers referred to the time years ago when the Salt Lake people came down to arrange for obtaining this water Then he said they exhibited a very brotherly feeling but he did not think It would ex cx extend tend so far as to Impel the Salt Lakers to do anything to control the water T following committee was appointed to the course ot of the river chan channel channel nel which Is to be enlarged James R Glade Andrew Knudsen A M Carter Charles H Ward The following committee was appointed to ascertain what farmers and landown landowners ers will wUl do In the way of hauling rock and gravel onto the roads H J W God Goddard Goddard dard George Cook Herman Knudsen J JJ JJ J Madsen and Marion Marlon Slinger The meet meeting meeting ing adjourned till Wednesday at 2 when both committees will report |
