Show FAVORS EXTENSION OF MAIN STREET Comm CommIssioner ss oner Mackay in Favor of Condemning Strip Two Miles Long LARGER MAINS ARE NE NEEDED DED MANY HOM HOMES IN NEED OF WA WATER WATER TER DURING LAST SUMMER The condemnation of a strIp of ground two miles mUes long irom Twelfth South 10 Fourteenth South str et for the extension n ot of Main street has been con for some time by the county corn com commissIoners missIoners and some action will be tak taken taken en in the spring according to John C Mackay one of the members of the board The plan to pave Main street from NInth South to Tenth South SoutI In the city and from Tenth to Twelfth South in the county is now being behig boosted more than ever and along thIs line of Improve Improvement meat ment the commIssioners take the position tion that the extension of Main Maln street with the assur assurance nce that It will be paved within a few years would add to the beauty of such a street and make It one of the most famous boulevards of the country Walter J Meeks a local real estate man Is at the head of a movement for forthe forthe the establishment of a boulevard whIch will find no equal In the country The rhe plan Is to have It an of asphalt pave and to make this one of the dis distinctive features of the city Mr MeekS has several petitions along this line Une whIch will lIkely be turned over to the Com Coin CommercIal mercIal club for presentation to the city cOuncil In a week or two For Magnificent Boulevard The plan contemplates the extension of the Main street boulevard from Ninth South to Eleventh South thence east to Sixteenth East street thence north along the bench and through several resIdence plats and the Fort Duglas military res reservation on Sixteenth East street to Eleventh avenue thence along Eleventh avenue to City Creek canyon up the can canyon canyon yon more than a mile mUe over to the west bank of the canyon and back to the city completing a cIrcuIt which for picturesque esque glimps s of a beautiful valley and noble mountains cannot be equaled in an another another other city In the United States Most of th the petitions have been already signed and It Is estimated that it will willbe be b but a short time when the work Is completed and the petitions are ready for presentation to the cIty councIL Be Besides Besides sides these there are several other strips whIch are to be paved and for which pe petitions are now being circulated though they are not considered a part of the boulevard system Mr Meeks sal said yesterday that rIghts of way feet vIde had been obtained through University Heights College VIew and Douglas Heights addItions that the theAU AU AJ Hallows college officers had granted a right of way feet wIde and 1000 feet long through theIr land on the bench that the city would give land through City cpm tery for the boulevard and that the United States government had practically practically agreed to dedicate a strip of land through the reservation for the b boule ule yard S The whole scheme will of course take more than the present year but It is be believed believed that much of the proposed boule boulevard yard vard can be finIshed this year and that the rest will be taken care of as soon as possible I Water Badly Needed More petitions are being circulated for water In the southeastern part of the city Last summer It is said hous houses s in the southeastern part of the city found It practically ImpossIble to get water on the second floor during the daytime The lack of at pressure was felt through the entire section owing to the small and poorly arranged mains The plan now under consideration is to have the main which runs from the Parleys canyon conduit to All Hal Hallows Hallows lows college tract on Seventeenth East street extended to connect with other mains from tills height It is declared that within a few years It will be im imperative imperative upon the cIty to put In a main direct from the conduit to this part of the cIty During the present year there will be unprecedented building on the southeast bench already shown in the fact that many purchasers of lots from Irom real es estate estate tate companies have st started to build homes this winter and will be ready to occupy them early In the spring Last summer homes on the Westminster Heights property east of the penitentiary penitentiary were not able to get water and thIs will be still worse this summer as hundreds of homes will be constructed as soon as the weather permIts 0 |
