Show I I AMUSEMENTS THE SERENADE It I has been many years since The Te Ser Serenade Sr enade was given in Salt Sal Lake This most tuneful of ot Victor Herberts comic operas is an ambitious production for an amateur company but the presentation by the Salt Lakers as a seen sen yesterday esterday at the theatre is of a high order of merit It I ranks well with former productions of at the old Salt Snit Lake opera company of which several everl of the opra principals were lu in II the present cast The company numbers play ers under the direction of Spen Spencer Spencer cr Clawson jr The opera is staged by b John D Spencer Costumes and scenery have been ben carefully selected and the cho chorus chonis rus nis rs work is far above the average That it I Is not a professional performance ap pears pers mainly In the long waits walts between acts and that It does dos not always go with spirit The principals are some of the most moat popular musicians of the city and they were never heard herd to better tage than in the beautiful songs of this opera Perhaps there is no comic opera of o which the music is more familiar and pop ular The great songs the Serenade pop Dreaming and Let Her Go are ar the principal features and each is sung in solo and repeated in chorus sev several several several eral times In a sense they are the theme of the music both orchestral and lyric although many other beautiful songs are also heard song The cast cst was admirably selected and each of the principals seemed to have hae a apart apart apart part suited suied to the voices The leading roles of Yvonne and Dolores were sung by Miss Gretha Cardon and Miss Iss Amy Apy Osborne Miss charm Ing soprano voice has been heard here before in opera oper and she displayed no lit lt tie tle te ability both as soloist and actress Her voice Is somewhat light but It i Is very vcr true and pure and she sings with ease and expression Miss Osborne made her debut yesterday in operatic music and her hr first appearance In the difficult role of Dolores was a success She has a clear contralto voice of considerable power and the Angelus song of ot the second act was manner sung brilliantly and in a finished In the tile mens roles roleS Horace Ensign and Fred Graham as of old were the favor ites Ies They have each had almost almot pro experience and are entirely at home behind the footlights Mr 11 Ensign Ensig took tol the part of Gomez and did the lead Ing comedy role In capital manner His Hissong Hissong Hissong song 0 O Dolores in th last act was perhaps the most perfect bit of at music In Inthe Inthe inthe the production He was also liked In Dreaming which he sang with Miss Cardon CarIon and Mr Campbell Campbel He made a hit with wih some local allusions especially in the Canyon road rod
