best trip of my life lite in my tour among the people of Wash Washington WashIngton WashIngton ington county from rom which we have just returned They are a great big gen people being among our most progressive and best citizens They have everything on earth that they the need except a railroad and this they the theare are likely to have very soon I will wilt do doall doall doall all in my power to help them get a road for it will WIlt enable them to do a great good for the state Governor William Spry Sp thus ex cx expressed pressed himself last night having re returned returned returned turned during the day with his party from a visit paid to Washington coun county county county ty penetrating Into the heart of ot the Dixie country of Utah It was a tour which had been made by no other gov governor governor governor of ot Utah during his term of office and the people of the neighborhood could not do enough for the members of the visiting party Governor Spry said last night that this is one of a 11 series of ot trips which he proposes to tomake tomake tomake make to various parts of the state to enable him to get acquainted with the people It is his Ills intention to pay a visit to the outlying districts of the state embraced In the counties of Grand San SanJuan SanJuan Juan Uintah Wasatch Rich and Sum Summit Summit Summit mit and perhaps others There is not so much need of ot visit visiting visiting ing the districts In the central part of the state where conditions arc are well known said Governor Spry but I believe the governor should get out among the people of the state get ac acquainted acquainted acquainted with them and learn their conditions and their needs Other Attractions The trip to Washington county was one which Governor Spry has had under contemplation for some time and he re recently recently decided to take the trip know knowing knowIng ing lug that A C Nelson superintendent of education was w c going to have a teach teachers teachers ers els institute there and the agricultural college officials also were making a trip to the neighborhood One of the features of ot the trip which was of much interest to the governor was students students dents of o higher institutions Speaking of this feature of his trip the governor said The more I see of the school facilities ties of the state the prouder I am of them We e have good buildings trough through out ont the district visited and an excellent e corps corp of teachers The state normal school at Cedar City is doing a good work is in a thrifty condition and andol andt ol at t present Is filling want in High nigh school work It nas a good faculty and the students are young men and women 1 am ani anxious to get gc geta a system of o high schools throughout the state which shall be feeders of ot our state institution The rhe people through throughout out the district we visited are strong on education We Ve rode over with one oi farmer Mr Windsor of Enterprise who is 18 supporting three s sons ons at the agricultural agricultural agricultural tural college colleg t The governor was enthusiastic over the natural resources of the country co which he visited He said there are endless possibilities for dry farming and some of the richest soil in the state which is producing pro a heavy growth of ot sage brush The Escalante desert he said offers of great inducements to set settlers settlers tiers who can get surface water within thirty feet of the surface At some places visited it was said that five crops of lucerne to the acre had been taken off ort the land The governor says Washington coun county county county ty with proper transportation facilities facilities facilities ties could take care of the poultry and egg business of ot the state hundreds ol o If thousands of ot dollars of ot this business coming from outside of the state at present The fruit facilities of ot the neighborhood also appealed to the gov governor governor governor The experiment station at St StGeorge StGeorge StGeorge George established by the agricultural college is making a specialty of or a certain certain tain tam grape which Is deemed best suited to the neighborhood and also Is ex cx experimenting experimenting with English and black walnuts for which there is said to be bea bea bea a great field it having been stated that one walnut tree produces 40 worth of walnuts It is said that the field also is good for the raising of figs pome pomegranates pomegranates pomegranates and other fruits the production production production tion of honey and of poultry With a railroad established through this district said the governor there would be no need of our people going to Los Angeles to spend the winter I believe it would be the best place in the west for winter homes The Th weather while we were there was lent The climate seems to be superb being like our spring weather without the rain Just before the visit of the thc governor and party to the district the people of Washington county met and agreed to furnish to the railroad should it be brought through a bonus of ot in the way of railroad grade and of way The governor says the people of Iron county also are ready to respond with a reasonable sum for the railroad which likely will be incorporated soon the construction company already being Incorporated The party was composed of the party was warm warmly warmly i ly received several meetings being held heW I and addresses made The entire population of Cedar City seemed to have turned out including the thes school s hoOl children and students of the normal school There was a banquet at atthe atthe atthe the normal school and a reception Wednesday morning a visit was waa paid to o othe the normal school where the students were addressed by the governor The party from there t ere went to Lund where the tile train was taken for the trip home homp The governor said he was surprised at the facilities in Washington county for making a living The county has hns hasgood hasgood good telephone facilities and other modern modem improvements Near Cedar City are great deposits of coal and Iron coal eoal being
