Show PLAY GIVES VICTO VICTORY TO CRIMSON Logan Fight Figh t Bravely Against Odds in in Spectacular Contest Before Big Crowd Growth BY COACH HADDOCK MADDOCK Utah won by a larger score than I expected Considering the crippled condition of my team the play was all that I could ask and I think we showed the spectators we could play football I 1 am glad that my last game as a coach ended as it did In the past six years the have not scored upon us Today they played hard and game football and showed themselves a strong team BY COACH It was simply a case of inexperienced men against veterans and the eleven that had the men versed in the fine points of the game won The score was larger than I expected As you saw my men were slower on their feet and at first were bewildered by the Utah attack later as they solved the forward pass used by Utah the play was broken up up u much more readily I am proud of the game exhibition my men offered and con considering considering considering the new men the Agricultural college can be proud of its show showing showing showing ing Watch out for the next year REFEREE BY COTTON The game was a good one and Utah won because she had the best team While the penalties were frequent and there was some roughness it was because of hard playing and a desire to win rather than to any intention for rough play Having officiated at the Denver University Haskell Indian and the Denver games I am free to admit that Utah would win from the Denver eleven She would win on her open play which is the best I have seen in the west this year In the past six yea the state university university sity and the state agricultural college have met six times on the gridiron and each game has returned the university a winner Yesterday the sixth straight vic victory victory tory for Coach Maddock Haddock and his crimson players came when the Aggles were de deft ft fated 22 to 0 O It was a good game of football between two elevens well matched In physical ability and each well drilled In the game genie The team that had more Individual stars that had eleven m mn min n of gridiron experience and that had been b en drilled well In a brilliant and diver diversified diversified sifi d attack as well as possessing a stonewall defense won Utah won fairly and on merit although playing luck may maybe maybe maybe be said to have favored her a little The battle was fought on a gridiron sur surrounded surrounded rounded by one of the largest and most representative assemblages of football fol followers followers lowers that has graced Cummings field The weather though cloudy cloud was Ideal for payers and spectators and the field while widle a trifle soft was all alt that could be asked The west bleachers were massed with the Utah students several cheering sec sections sections sections for classes being set apart In the grandstand surrounding their college band the Aggie rooters did their beet beat be t to tomake tomake tomake make their team win and hurled back across the field their cheers and songs with wAth a fine show of spirit The east ea t bleachers were also packed with spectators and around the north end of the field automobiles and carriages containing their ribbon bedecked parties were lined two deep Five thousand per persons persons sons Suns saw the play I Balloons Go Up Between the halves an enthusiastic band of af students sent sailing over Black moun mountain mountain tain tam two balloons with Utah and med ined medic ic banners attached The third aircraft to be sent aloft was a R balloon in the shape of a n pig In honor of the farmer visitors Roars of laughter greeted the flight of the tre animal as wafted by the south breeze ho he made his way over the school build buildings buildIngs ings lags The last ascension was that of a balloon similar to that of the first firs two only this time cheers from the Aggie sec eec section tion tinn were heard as it was seen to carry an Aggie banner Again the university students laughed however hoever as with a loud report a bomb carried by the balloon ex ox exploded exploded and the th Aggie banner like lUte the fate soon to befall the Aggie hopes sank to the ground From the start of the play pIa it was W seen that Utah had no easy task before her to carry off the honors of at the day The won the toss toes and selected to receive the kIckoff on the south goal which was favored with noticeable wind In the first two plays the Aggles sought to te penetrate the Utah line Une but In each attempt were thrown for a loss Batt kicked and Utah was wa pounding away toward the Farmer Fanner goal Twice were the yards made and then the Aggles held and the ball went over oer From then on until Loves sensational 6 vj ard run did the ball seesaw back and forth although always In the Aggie terri tern territory territory i tory Utah seemed to gain consistently but hut a forward pass that fell short a pen penalty penalty alty combined with the stubborn playing of If the visitors kept the Crimson eleven from within the line After 16 Ii 1 minutes of play Doolittle shot shota a forward pass to Love who after mak making makIng ing a beautiful catch sprinted twisting and dodging through the Aggie tacklers to ta the goal line for the first score Love a Star Not Nat only In this one ODe run but In the making of the second touchdown and in innumerous innumerous innumerous numerous other brilliant dashes through the tho Aggie line and ends did Love Loe show himself to b be one of the most brilliant ground gainers through a broken field ever eyer seen at the university In the all allaround allaround allaround around handling of the ball and running the signals for tor his team Love showed that he further possessed pos eased the qualities of ot ofa ota ofa a field general and quarterback On three other occasions was the Aggie goal line crossed cro sed but only In the sec see second second ond half For the remainder of the first half the Aggles kept their goal safe Three times Doolittle tried for a goal from placement but the wind foiled each attempt The Aggles were being out outplayed outplayed pla played ed but nevertheless fought on con eon contesting contesting testing every inch gained Early Barly they showed themselves hard and effective tacklers and possessed of a strong line Utah tah made gains through the line Une but the open play and end runs from fake take formations were found easier The second half opened with Loell Loch at fullback haying having relieved Doolittle with a minute to play left In the first half Though still suffering from an Injury to his knee Lochs ability to put ginger in the Utah men was wa seen at once The first play after the kick kickoff kickoff kickoff off was a forward pass Loell to Love but the ball struck the ground Forced Forred to kick after he the penalty Loell sent the oval to Egbert who fumbled and Walker recovered for Utah With the ball In midfield the same forward pass Loch Loell to Love was attempted This time the play worked and Love stand standIng standIng In Ing on the west side line caught the ball prettily and started his dash for forthe forthe forthe the Aggie goal Two Aggles were shaken off and only anly Egbert coming In Ia fast was left As Egbert left his feet for the tackle Love dodged like a flash to the Inside and got sot by his hisman hisman hisman man With the stands In an uproar the ball was planted behind the posts and Loell later kicked the goal Score 11 to 0 for tor Utah Utah Uses Pass Here began again the use of the forward d pass by Utah Loch Loell standing far back of his line hurling the sphere from twenty to thirty yards Some worked for good gains sains but the were getting onto the play and many failed At that tho the ball ban was worked up to the Aggles line where Loell Loen tried a place kick but the ball fell short Penalties for Illegal forward passes gave the Aggles two chances at goals from placement but In each case the kicks went either wide or short of the mark In making the kicks Batt was forced to hurry by the charging Crim Crimson Crimson Crimson son line Had his line held better the string of goose eggs chalked up against the Aggles In the past six Ix years might have been broken Never ever everon everon on straight play did the visitors have havea a chance to score Once toward the close of the game when Loell missed a punt and a blue figure fell on the ball on the Utah line it looked like a score The Utah line held good against two line plunges however and again Batt missed a try at goal The third Utah score came on a long longlow longlow longlow low forward pass by Loell standing on the Aggles yard line Two I Utah men were ready to catch the throw but a Logan man mart Jumped for forthe forthe forthe the ball but could not retain It In Inthe Inthe Inthe the scramble for the rolling pigskin Grant was upon It first and after a neat recovery lurched across the line for the score Loell Loch kicked the goal The final score followed the forcing forcin of the Aggles to kick from tram their goal line The ill doll left Batts boot but was blocked rolling behind the line The seemed uncertain as to what to do and cell oell charging through the line fell upon the ball for forthe tho the score The goal was missed and the final score as It proved to be stood Utah 22 Aggles 0 O Interesting Throughout I From the standpoint of Interest to the spectators the game was a most Interesting one While the Aggles re resorted resorted resorted sorted to futile onslaughts on the Utah line they held the tho ball but a com corn comparatively comparatively short time being forced to kick on tho the third down open play and wide spreading formations gave the rooters plenty of chance to trace the progress of the play Added to the forward passes the dashing runs of Love Romney and Grant brought the spectators to their feet time and time again On the defense the were good In the line but could not cope with the varied attack against the tho ends For Utah Captain TIllie Olson and Left Tackle Home were wore towers of strength Each broke through to throw an Aggio Aggie for loss repeatedly It was Captain Olsons last game and he played brilliantly For Ioor Logan Egbert Hancock and Paddock were responsible for most of the gains and to them feM feil fe l the honor honorof of the four first made against Utah For new men the Aggles to a aman aman aman man played great ball bali While time was taken out many times the Logan lineup went through the th game without a change Injuries to Doolittle and Walker brought Loell and Korns into the play for Utah Handicapped by small material and many obstacles placed in the way of football at Logan on account of the death of Evans in 1908 much credit Is due to Coach for the eleven he turned out The spirit shown by bythe bythe bythe the Aggie team and rooters was also most creditable in the face of defeat It was the case of a better and faster eleven better drilled in the new now game equaled only In gameness sameness against opponents handicapped principally by Inexperience The game will however be remembered as one of the big struggles struggles struggles on Cummings field It comes as asa asa asa a fitting close to the work of J H Maddock as coach Game in Detail At both teams were on the field ready for the
