This ; program is a unique and suc- cessful program of liberal education designed especially lor elementary and secondary school students. 1 ; participating students were , required to read twelve of the 111 Junior Great Books. These lei books are a selection of clas- !i sical children's stories such as Treasure Island, A Christ-J, Christ-J, mas Carol, Beauty and the j Beast, etc. After reading the vi stories at home, the students j met in discussion groups i" twice a month. Here each J student tried to discover the 5 meaning of the story for himself. him-self. The students enjoyed .' discussing why the characters acted as they did, why some characters succeeded suc-ceeded while others failed, vc& otto questions." j EACH discussion group was conduced by two volunteer 7( mothers. These mothers ; were specially trained to be ' Junior Great Book leaders i during a two day training "-2S' course held last summer. The training course was conducted con-ducted by Howard Will, a college professor from Calif. The course was also open to ie teachers who were interested t in recertification credit or I J, college credit, i The Junior Great Books Program is new to Davis School District. It was initiated ini-tiated at Hannah Holbrook Elementary under the direction direc-tion of Sheryl Allen. The program was sponsored by the School P.T.A. VOLUNTEER leaders who Volunteer leaders Sheryl Allen and Janice Ridges gather with some of the students at Hannah Holbrook School who participated in the recent Junior Great Books program.
