Show By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - After piking with the coaches and fm5i0,,the P'8" around the two leagues, things could prove interesting in basket-pa" basket-pa" in their respective leagues this year. oE W0RD aru"" Region One is uncertainty. After all, of the eight schools in the league, five have new head coaches. Only Weber, Layton and Roy have the same head men as they did a year ago. Three schools, Viewmont, Bountiful and Clearfield have men who are acquainted with the program at the helm, as does Sky View, while the Bonneville school has a new man from outside the school. With this many new faces it s easy to see why the coaches and players are wondering won-dering themselves just what will happen this year. STILL SEVERAL teams did keep getting mentioned as winners this season, although no one indicated that either eague would be a cake walk. Weber has their big people back which makes them one of the favorites for the title Last year as a young club the Warriors caught the attention of people around the area They won't surprise anyone this year-in fact several clubs will be out after the Weber club. Roy has a couple of good players back, Mark Sindle and Fred Fernandes. If the Royals can come up with three other players to fit into uniforms they should be a contender. Layton has their big people back, Brandon Flint and Gordon Anderson, and if Coach Moon can get some good play from the guard line, the Lancers might very well add a basketball title to their list. CLEARFIELD LOST a lot of players, but they have a good bunch up from a very successful junior varsity program. Roger Vincent is their main man with help from Mark Reid, who was a starter last year. Size might hurt the Falcons in their games with the other three clubs. The rest of the league is rated as even with Bountiful looking for help from underclassmen, un-derclassmen, Viewmont returning re-turning two good guards but little experience up front. Sky View has one good big man in Lance Lindley and a good guard while the total mystery team will be Bonneville. AS THE COACHES see the race then, also some of the players, the league should look something like this at the end. 1. Weber 2. Roy. 3. Layton. 4 Clearfield. 5. Viewmont. 6. Bountiful 7. Sky View. 8. Bonneville. AS FOR REGION Four, things look just as complex except for a different reason. All the top clubs have some excellent people back. Woods Cross returns everyone including All-State center Mark McCleery, Davis has a lot of returning starters including guard Mike Moun-teer. Ogden is tough with two juniors like Aaron MacCarthy back in their fold. Ben Lomond has Robbie Tillman back, regarded as one of the best guards in the state. LOGAN IS coming off a very good football year and that could flow over into basketball, Tann Tueller is an excellent guard. Bear River and Box Elder were hit by graduation and are unknown as is South, who returns a lot of players off of a dismal club. Here's how their region shapes up according to those polled. 1. Woods Cross. Z Ben Lomond. 3. Davis. 4. Ogden. 5. Logan. 6. Box Elder. 7. Bear River. & South. REMEMBER these are the coaches and players talking and predicting, but then what do they know, right? |
