Show Layton Says No To Use Of Chambers LAYTON -- The Layton city council, at least for the time being, has decided it will not allow the new Utah Circuit Court to use the city council chambers as a courtroom. THE COUNCIL voted not to rent its (city) chambers for courtroom use during the next fiscal year despite the $10,000 rental fee the circuit court would pay. Mayor Lewis G. Shields explained that the contract reads that the court would "have priority use of the council chambers." "I DON'T think we want to get into this situation," the mayor commented. "I know that they (courts) do not usually hold sessions when we (council) meets, but you never know what the future will bring." The council agreed and voted unanimously to deny rental of the council chambers to the circuit court. UNDER the new court system, sys-tem, the state (courts) would pay cities rental based on the amount of space utilized. In Layton, the amount is estimated es-timated at near $10,000. grb |
