It's romantic in the 'Errol Flynn way and the music is beautiful beau-tiful and stirring." THIS Rudolf Friml operetta will play at Pioneer Memorial Theatre May 4-20. Mr. Fearnley is here from New York to direct this, his fourth production at PMT. "The Vagabond King" Is the story of Francois Villon, the French hero who became King for a day and was saved, by love, from the hangman's noose. ROBERT Peterson - PMT's great actor-in-residence who has delighted Utah audiences as: Robert Browning, Hans Christian Andersen, King Arthur, Haaj, and Don Quixote Qui-xote to name just a few - will play Francois Villon. "It is probably the definitive defini-tive operetta," said James Prigmore, PMT's musical director who is also conducting conduct-ing for this production. "It was first produced in 1925 and continues to enjoy frequent revivals throughout the country," he said. "THE songs are timeless. ..there's the rousing "Song of the Vagabonds" and the romantic "Only A Rose" and "Love Me Tonight" and the plaintive "Tomorrow." It's an exciting score." "The Vagabond King" is set in 15th century France during the reign of Louis XI. Based on Justin McCarthy's "If I Were King," music is by Kudoif Friml with the book and lyrics by Russell Janey and Brian Hooker. LOUIS XI (played by H.E.D. Redford) seeks revenge on Katherine de Vaucelles (Rebecca Glade) for rejecting him. Katherine finds that France has been betrayed by Thibaut D'Aus-signy D'Aus-signy (David Chandler) and begs Villon to remove the danger. The deed done, the romance grows and builds to a happy ending for France and for all concerned. The tone is Rebecca Glade and Robert Peterson will take lead rolls in "The Vagabond King," being presented in Pioneer Memorial Theater May 4-20. romantic and the action heroic. HAROLD Folland plays Tristan L'Hermite, confidant of the King. Others in the cast are: Michael A. Blazina, M.R. Beau Chaine', Edward Clark, Zelie N. Daniels, Kevin T. Harris, Cheryl Henoch, Ryan Johnson, John Rust, Debby Schopler, Holly Sloan, Ann Wetzel of Bountiful and many singers and dancers, including Kevin Alvey of Farmington and Lila Lee LeVar of North Salt Lake. The settings - from a tavern in the Thieves' Quarter to the Court of Louis XI - were designed by David M. Cox. ' Elizabeth Robinson, PMT Costumer, has designed the costumes and the lighting designs are by Elizabeth Murray. Rowland Butler, resident choreographer, did the choreography for this show and L. Stacy Eddy is fight director. "THE Vagabond King" will play nightly (except Sundays) May 4 through May 20 at 8 p.m. There will be a matinee performance on Saturday, May 13 at 2 p.m. Reservations may be made by calling the Pioneer Memorial Theatre box office. |
