There will be a lot new faces around the Cyprus high baseball program this spring, including at the head coaching spot. After eight years in the top post, LaRon Unck decided to turn the program over to someone else and Tom Given, his assistant for all of those eight years got the nod. Assisting Given will be Bob Fratto, formerly an assistant at Skyline for two years and also the coach of the Granger American Legion Team. After watching the Pirates for the reach the state past couple of year, Given now inherits a program hurt by the loss of 10 seniors to graduation. This years team will include five seniors, only part of which saw very much varsity action. As a result, Coach Given has a lot of questions at present, questions he hopes to start answering when the Pirates varsity plays tomorrow (Friday) when Weber pays a call at 3:30 p.m. On Monday, March 28, Cyprus will be at East, then returns home on April 1 to take on Bonneville, both games also starting at 3:30. Granger high got its baseball season off to a wild start, taking 13-1- 2 decision home from Provo Tuesday afternoon as Ryan Mathewson had two strikeouts in a row in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win. , Today (Thursday) Granger entertains Highland at 3:30 p.m. then on the following Monday hosts the annual Granite District Tournament, which continues on March 29, 30 and, if necessary, 31. Granger Cottonwood and Skyline will be joined by Roy, Brighton, Layton and Bountiful. Games will be at 1 and 3:30 p.m. the first day at both Granger and Cottonwood high schools. Game times ,for the rest of the tournament will be decided later. Granger hosts Brighton in the opening round of the tournament. The Lancers open league play on April 5, when Cyprus pays a 3:30 call. Granger went into the seventh leading 0 and got the winning run when Ryan Lowther scored Jake Shewmake on a sacrifice fly. After Provo had battled to within n a run with a double, with the bases Mathewson, 12-1- two-ru- loaded, came on to retire the side. Granger had 15 hits in the contest, Scott Valdez getting three including a double; Brett Seager, Shewmake, Lance Short and Lowther two hits each; and Richard Hickmon two doubles. Hickmon was also the winning pitcher, working innings. Coach Folster will continue to look for good things from his senior group, which includes Shewmake at third, Jonas Hamlin at short, Hickmon at first and pitcher, Short in leftfield, Travis Langpap in center, Valdez at second and Tyler Wilder, catch and utility man. Juniors expected to make their mark are Shane Warenski, Lowther, Lonnie Mathewson and Strasburg, catcher Seager. "Weve got a pretty young pitching staff with three of the four from the junior ranks, Folster stated. "But we should have a better hitting and defensive team." Folster feels that Taylorsville remains the team to beat, but Skyline is looking good thus far as well. He also expects his own team to be in the thick of things." pitcher-rightfield- er Granite Club Rips Sky View GRANITE PARK. Two sophomores to watch, according to Given, are catcher Andy Gonzales and California move-i- n Scott Eyre in the outfield. 'With kids some many graduating, maybe Coach Unck got out a good time," joked Given. "But seriously, the loss of so many good players has to hurt. However, we feel good about the group we have now. The Titans next scheduled varsity contest wont be until April 5, when they take on Skyline in their league opener at home, also at 3:30. Although both games ended in rather depressing fashion, Coach Marc Lyons has some bright spots in the play of juniors Chad Larson, who has gone 5x6 at the plate in the two games and has pitched well, and Rick Evans, who has two homers to his credit. Sophomore pitchers Brad Gregory and John Smith have also been coming along. Graduation really hit Olympus hard, leaving just two lettermen returning in senior first baseman Jeff Geertson and junior catcher Chip Ehlers, reported Coach Lyons. Two other players with ' some varsity experience are seniors Brian Seagle at third and Orion Stonebreaker in centerfield. Other seniors that will be starting this year for the Titans are Larry Vance at shortstop and Dustin Childs at second. We lost a lot of our skill people," stated Coach Lyons, "most of our depth at pitching and the infield. It will definitely be a rebuilding year for us." Lyons, like most of the area coaches, will be using these first few games to "play and get to know a lot of people." Hes especially concerned about his pitching staff, which does not include any seniors. Taylorsville, Cyprus, Granger Colt Baseball Squad Is Very Young SOUTH COTTONWOOD.
