An asthma alert was among subjects discussed at a fall institute held Thursday at Taylorsville high for teachers in Granite School District. Dr. Edwin Bronsky of the Intermountain Allergy Clinic warned health and physical education teachers that students with asthma are sometimes forced to do aerobic exercises that they are unable to do. The workshop was one of 0 different classes given at the high school, according to district spokesman Bry D. Sorensen. He said the workshops were offered on every phase of the educational curriculum and added a workshop was also given for administrators. 25-3- At Utech Is Topic At Individual school workshops were also given at the various schools in an effort to the teachers to classes that began in the district nt Monday. Asthma, according to Frank Brough, executive director of the Utah Lung Assn., is a common lung disease of children. An estimated two million children in the United States under age 14 are asthmatics and some 13,000 reside in Utah, he said. Most parents, he said, are aware of the problem and have had it diagnosed as asthma by a doctor. Symptoms of the disease, he said are shortness of breath, wheezing, breathing and coughing. ty GSD Workshop A diagnosis for each case, he pointed out, is necessary to determine the cause and find a medication to relieve or control the symptoms. No two childrens asthma is alike, he said, because the disease is caused by an allergic reaction to such things as food, pollen, animal dander (hair, skin etc.). Everyones body, he said, reacts differently. Advice given to teachers about students with asthma includes having a conference with the parents about medication, medical management and specific condition. Feelings about exercise and physical education goals for the child should also be set. A handout given to the health and P.E. teachers advised the following: - medical and emergency pro- cedures should be established. gym activities should not be started when a child has noticeable symptoms of asthma. gym activities should be discontinued if an asthma episode develops. - children should learn the joy of physical activity and how to keep pace with themselves. Brough added that similar handouts were also given to classroom teachers and school nurses. Further printed information on asthma may be obtained by contacting the Utah Lung Assn, at The organization, Brough said, also offers self-car- e training classes - 484-445- 6. $35 for school-ag- City Council Meeting Cancelled; No Business WEST VALLEY.
