Show For Laotion Youngsters fifth and sixth graders They are very shy Volunteer Paves Adjustment Road by Olga Milius TAYLORSVILLE Se- veral Laotian children enrolled at Taylorsville elementary are adjust- ing very well to life in the United States, thanks largely to the efforts of volunteer Johnson. Milton Principal Johnson said Mrs. gives her time every morning to assist the children in their efforts to learn English and to become used to the ways and customs of their new country. This is an entirely new culture for these children, new kinds of homes, new foods, a new Va-cha- Va-cha- school situation, even new games to play. It can be extremely frustrating for them Mrs Johnson is herself Laotian, speaks their language and is invaluable in explaining things to them, he observed. The children are learning language skills as Mrs. Johnson shows them pictures, colors and numbers. She teaches them the words (in English) for their arms, hands, feet and eyes, and answers their questions about new experiences or situations that bewilder them, said the principal. Inability to communicate is the most frus trating part of living in a new country. Having someone available to explain things in their own language and to help explain their reactions to others is most helpful, he added Mrs. Johnson has lived in the area for 8'2 years. She and her husband Carl have two difficulties they faced The children like it here and are learning to communicate. They are enjoying school more all the time, she comment- children, both of whom attend Taylorsville school Catherine is in kindergarten and William is a third grader.
