Enforcement of traffic regulations will be intensified here following City Commiss.on action Tuesday approving 11 additional police officers for a traffic control unit. Commission approval was granted Tuesday after City Auditor M Gerry Ashman confirmed Police Chief David Campbell's contention that the unit would not be a drain on the city budget. The traffic control unit will crack down on speeders through school zones and drinking drivers, Chief Campbell said Ashmans study calculated that the unit would generate between $100,000 and $328,000 for the city budget in the period ending June 30, Additional officers will allow stricter enforcement of speed laws in likely. It will allow closer scrutiny of the citys financial standing and reallocation of funds within the budget, Mayor Henry (Hank) Price said. The reallocation probably will involve placing some of the revenue generated by the traffic unit into the police budget, which will be strained by the early addition of officers. Seven new officers were to be added to the police department on Jan. 1. Commission approval of the traffic unit brings those seven officers on board at least six weeks earlier, and also adds four more officers. The cost of adding those officers will be compensated for by revenue produced by the unit, the auditors study confirmed. next few months City court records show that 51 DUI cases were filed before Justice of the Peace Bruce Larsen during September. The traffic unit also will focus on what a preliminary police study conincludes are the 10 tersections in the city. Six of the intersections are on 3500 South, beginning with Redwood Road and continuing west through 5600 West. The other four spots are on 4100 South. Mayor Henry (Hank) Price commended the auditor for his study and stressed that West Valley would not become a speed trap, raising money for the city through the wholesale issuance of citations school zones. Police have received numerous requests from PTA officials and parents to crack down on speeders, Campbell said. More patrolmen also will enable West Valley officials to increase efforts to control drinking drivers within city limits. The DUI (driving under the influence) problem in our area is uniIts far more than in other que. places, said Commissioner Renee Mackay, whose portfolio includes public safety. Asst. Chief Maughan said West Valley police arrested 50 motorists on DUI charges during September Most of those will go to court in the high-accide- 1981. He estimated that citations handed out by the additional officers would raise $293,700, costs would amount to Warrant fees and failure $193,800. to pay fines could raise another $228,000, Ashman reported. The officers are expected to join the West Valley force in after being screened and interviewed by the city civil service board, Assistant Chief Gerald i i Three Sections - 36 Pages W&tOafWaf SAFETY . . .
