Show A DARING KOBBEEY. BANDITS HOLD UP PASSENGER TRAIN IN WYOMING. Used Dynamite to Blow Open the Safe, and "Wreck a Bridge and Several Cars None of the Passengers "Were Molested by Bobbers. Cheyenne, Wyo. , June 4. J list before daylight Friday morning, in the midst of a drenching rain, the Union Pacific west bound passenger train was held up, about a mile from Wilcox. The robbers blew up the express car with d3'namite, severely wounding the engineer, and then escaped to the mountains. moun-tains. According to the officials of the express companj', the robbers obtained only a nominal reward for their daring crime. A posse, under command of the sheriff of Carbon county, is ia pursuit, and the officers are confident of capturing cap-turing them. The bandits, six in number, num-ber, are believed to be members of the "Ilole-in-the-Wall"' gang. The train was the westbound passenger, passen-ger, also carrying mail and express. It was running in two sections, the first section being the one held up. This section consisted of two mail cars, a baggage car filled with overland mail, an express car and two well-filled passenger pas-senger coaches. This section was dne at Wilcox, at 2:09 a. m , but it was a little late. It had passed Wilcox and was flagged by a red light between Wilcox and Aurora at 2:1S. It was at a point 393 miles east of Ogden, or 133 miles west of Cheyenne. As the train reached the bridge one of the robbers crawled into the cab and at the point of a gun ordered Engineer En-gineer Jones to pull across the bridge and stop. Meanwhile, the others of the gang were at work in the express car. Just as the engine pulled off the bridge there was a tremendous explosion explo-sion that scattered the express car for a hundred feet in every direction. The end of the mail car was blown in and several stringers knocked out of the bridge. Engineer Jones was slightly injured by flying debris. It only required a few minutes for the robbers to rifle the safe, which was blown open by the explosion. They took its contents, signalled their confederates con-federates on the engine, and before the passengers and the train crew were aware of just what had happened were off for the mountains. It required re-quired two hours to clear away the wreck so that the train could proceed to Medicine Bow, the next station, from which the report was sent. The passengers were not molested by the bandits, and the only person injured in-jured was the engineer. A reward of $1,000 each for the arrest of the robbers, dead or alive, has been offered by the express company. |
