Show Eighty-fourth Birthday Celebrated by Mr. Gates Mounting the 81th rung of his life ladder, Sunday, March 22nd, was Dr. Jedediah Morgan Gates,; ! Dixie's first dentist, who was born 1 in Salt Lake City March 22, 1858, ! a son of Jacob and Emma Fors-' Fors-' berry Gates. The eventful date iwas quietly observed in his St. 'George home, the one time Dixie 'residence of Brigham Young, while! he was supervising the erection iof the St. George Temple. Graduated from B. Y. V. He came with his parents when a small child, where he had his early education, later graduating from the B. Y. U., where he was known as an outstanding student. Besides his preparation for the vocation of dentist, he was trained in music, and was skilled with both piano and trumpet, playing in the early bands of Dixie. After his graduation from the B. Y. U. he worked for some time as dental den-tal associate of Dr. Stanley Claw-son Claw-son of Salt Lake City, later practiced prac-ticed in Silver Reef, moving to ?U Honrp-p in 1887 to hernmp this city's first resident dentist, which he followed for 55 years. In this connection he operated an as-sayer's as-sayer's office in the building erected erec-ted by Brigham Young for a church office building during his sojourn in St. George. Along with his church activities he has served as city recorder, and for several terms as county assessor. Gardening has always been his hobby. May 25, 1891 he married Elizabeth Eliza-beth Luella Andrus in the St. George Temple. She died in 1927. Residing with him in St. George is a daughter, Mrs. Vera G. Mitchell. Mitch-ell. Two other daughters, Mrs. Ben Bringhurst of Toquerville and Mrs. Edwin Higbee of Pinto, a sister, Mrs. Adelaide Gates Snow of Salt Lake City, a brother, Arthur Ar-thur W. Gates of Piedmont, Calif., nine grandchildren and one greatgrandchild great-grandchild make up his close living liv-ing relatives. - |
