' A r ' J ) Davien Cray Houchin Houchin called to serve in Pennsylvania Davien Cray Houchin, son of Mick and June Norton, has accepted a two-year mission call to service in Philadelphia, Pa. He will speak on Aug. 13, at 2:45 p.m. at 2575 North 1500 West, Maeser 3rd Ward. Houchin will enter the Mission Training Center on Aug. 16. Marty Combs Vernal singer graduates Marty Combs, son of Rita Osborne, of Vernal, and Vern Combs, of Bossier City, La., graduated gradu-ated cum laude from Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., on May 13, with a Bachelor of Arts degree de-gree in Music Business. He plans to further pursue his singing career. A two-time winner of the local County Showdown, he also sang at different establishments in town. Marty and his wife, Nicole, are also the proud parents of a son, Christopher Dalton, born on Oct 8, 1994. Winn Winn speaks about Hawaii mission Elder James S. Winn, son of Steve and Claudine Winn, Vernal, will report re-port his mission at Glincs 1st Ward at 10:20 a.m., on Aug. 13. Winn will arrive home Aug. 8, from a two-year mission in Honolulu, Hawaii. Trophy awarded 65 years later Old time rodeo cowboy and Vernal native, Earl W. Eascom, was recently presented an Ail-Around Champion trophy buckle for rodeo honors he won 65 years ago. Back in 1930, Bascom entered a rodeo at the 3 Bar Ranch near the Canadian prairie town of White Bear, Saskatchewan. It was his lucky day as he won second in the bareback riding event second in the steer riding event and grabbed the Ail-Around Champion Cowboy title- the very first of his rodeo career- before heading down the road to the next rodeo. Leaving no forwarding for-warding address, Bascom never received re-ceived his Ail-Around Champion buckle. The undelivered award remained re-mained forgotten until recently when Jim Davis, present owner of the 3 Bar Ranch and grandson of Frank Davis who produced the 3 Bar Ranch rodeo in 1930, tracked down the now 89 year old cowboy Earl Bascom at his California Ranch and presented the long awaited await-ed trophy buckle some 65 years later. MOMs to hold potluck The "Mothers of Missionaries" (MOMs Club) of Vernal will hold its quarterly meeting Thursday, Aug. 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Uintah Stake Center Pavilion. Unlike past meetings, all families of LDS missionaries currendy serving serv-ing or called from the Vernal area are invited to attend. Each familyis asked to bring a potluck dish to share' and a beverage. Paper goods will be provided. This nonprofit club, formed 14 months ago, serves the families of over 130 LDS missionaries currently current-ly serving from the Vernal area, from Tridell to Jensen. The newsletter, newslet-ter, containing information about the missionaries and their addresses, is sent to all MOMs. Often the MOMs then mail it on to missionary sons and daughters, who enjoy hearing hear-ing of their friends' experiences. All MOMs are requested to turn in newsletter information by Thursday, Aug. 10, as the newsletter will be completed before the meeting, and handed out there. UNIVERSITY mmmui mm mmc In Vernal and Roosevelt Doug Davidson Davidson to report on St. Louis mission Doug Davidson, son of Kathy and Leroy Worthen, has completed a two-year mission in St. Louis, Mo. He will report his mission on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4:50 p.m. at the Maeser Stake Center. News from Manila by Clara Robinson 784-3463 Residents do well at Fair At the meeting of the Daggett Board of Education, July 12, Charles Mohler was released from his contract as coach for baseball, track, and teaching social studies on secondary level. Mohler has accepted a position as head coach in Idaho and is moving there. At the same meeting, the board hired Rick Shaffer who will replace Mohler. Manila participants in the Sweetwater Fair are home as the Fair ended Sunday, Aug. 6. Most of the Manila people feel that Manila and area did quite well. At this time it is not known just what each individual indi-vidual won, however, a report of the produce booth for Manila was received. re-ceived. The booth received reserve grand champion, and Manila's Louise G. Gosar received the prize for the most entries. The volunteer Recreation Banquet is scheduled for Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. Happy Hour is at 6 p.m. Manila LDS ward has scheduled Aug. 16 for a special activity. The local Aging Board is scheduled sched-uled to meet after the Wednesday noon meal at the Senior Citizen Center on Aug. 9. A Shrincrs breakfast is scheduled for Aug. 19. There will be a charge for this, so everyone is welcome. Mrs. W. Robinson accompanied her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Art Robinson, of Rock Springs, to a reunion of the descendants descen-dants of Jeremiah Lagdon and Harriet Osborn Robinson. The reunion re-union was at Starvation State Park, four miles northwest of Duchesne. Those attending enjoyed boating, water skiing, wading, swimming and a number of other water activities activi-ties including fishing. The Saturday evening activities included a dinner, short program, election of officers, and a horse shoe throwing contest. During the horse shoe contest, some drove to Roosevelt where they saw the exceptionally beautiful fireworks fire-works at the UBIC. Daggett Board of Education has been advertising for persons to fill two positions. This became necessary neces-sary when the school switched back to the five-day school week instead of the four-day school week like it had been last year. One position was for part-time custodian at the Manila Elementary School. The other was for a part-time aide in the Special Education Department. This position will be mostly secretarial work with the person reporting to Mrs. G. Dickerson. These positions will be filled at the board meeting Aug. 9. The two elders who will both be going into the Missionary Training Center Aug. 16. Elder Casey McKee will be going to the California, Carlsbad Mission, and Elder Daniel McKee will be going go-ing to the Canada, Toronto East Mission. A William McKee Family Reunion was held at the Maeser Park, Saturday. Those from outside the Basin who came to visit relatives rela-tives and attend the reunion and the McKees' testimonial were Merle and George Watkins, Weiser, Idaho; Roslie Whitman, Moroni; Viola and Tony Munh and Lorene Siddoway, Oregon; Sara and Ralph Bowen and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Morrill, West Jordan; Mr. and Mrs. Bill McKee, daughter, Jill, and two sons, Matthew and Benjamin, and their spouses, Sandy. Visiting at the Merlin McKee . home was Mrs. McKee's sisters, Pat and Seth Banner, Salt Lake City, and brother, Rodney, and Jane Hall, Malta, Idaho. Maurine Hatch, Helena, Mont., and Amy Reese and Larinda Faucett, of Coalville, attended the testimonial and were guests Sunday at the Merlin McKee home. Mr. and Mrs. David Wallace and family have been on a trip to southern south-ern California. They went to San Jose, Calif., where they picked up their son, Elder Jared Wallace, who has completed a two-year mission for the LDS Church.' The Wallace family went to Disneyland and visited vis-ited many places of interest. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Moosman have just moved into a new mobile home that they have purchased. It is located just north of the Ray Haslcm home. The Tridell community sponsored a "24th of July" celebration at the community pavilion. It was under the direction of community President Mark Williams. Eighth Annual Camp Meetings to Begin The World Vision Assembly of God will host its annual camp meeting meet-ing beginning Wednesday, Aug. 16. Because of the early school start, the camp will conclude on Sunday, Aug. 20. The Curtis Long Family Ministries will be the guest musicians musi-cians and speakers. The family is composed of Curtis and Linda Long, and their two sons, Grayson and Grady. Their music ranges from light contemporary to traditional. They have made several albums which will be available. by children's games, a little rodeo, and a grease pig chase. The two pigs were caught by David Harvey and Tyler McKee. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Trujillo, Manti, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Merkley. They came to get their son, Jonathon, who had spent the past two weeks Spanish-speaking mission in Spokane, Wash. She will enter the Mission Training Center Sept. 6. Eric is accepting a two-year mission mis-sion in Utica, N.Y., and enter the Mission Training Center, Aug. 23. Evangelist Curtis Long preaches a simple gospel message. His desire is to reach families with the message of "Hope in Christ" during these troubling times. Pastor Stan Arias invites everyone to join them nightly at 7 p.m., except ex-cept Sunday, when the services are at 10:15 a.m. and 6 p.m. A nursery is provided.
