The Class II quilts category is for those which include in-clude machine embroidery and applique. ap-plique. The Class II category still requires all quilts to be hand-pieces, hand appliqued, hand embroidered, or a combination of these methods using firmly woven fabrics. The purpose of the contest is to promote traditional quilting as past of the heritage of the early Utah settlers. Quilting has long been an economical use of fabric remnants and has provided hours of home entertainment. The USU Quilt Contest, which starts on the county level, is subject to these general rules. A quilt can be made from original or traditional patterns. Quilt tops alone will not be accepted. It must be hand quilted rather than machine, tied, or yarn tied. It may be made by an individual or group. Each contestant must compete in one of the eight area county quilt contests. A contestant can enter more than one quilt in the area contest, but only one can be selected for state competition. The quilt must have been finished within the last three years and cannot have been entered in a previous USU Quilt Contest. All contestants must be Utah residents. A short description explaining how the quilt was made, cost of materials, who helped in the construction, time spent in production and overall inspiration in-spiration for the pattern should be submitted with the entry. Judging to determine the state winners in the two classes will take place the week prior to the Festival of the American West.
