Show Utah highway deaths down The year just ended saw significant improvement in highway fatalities. In 1982, there were 296 deaths according to the latest count. In 1981, there were 364 people killed in traffic mishaps. This ' means that there are 68 people still alive 'Who would have met death had the 1981 trend continued. That is a drop of 19. Alcohol related fatals showed an even steeper decline from 151 in 1981 to 110 in 1982, according to preliminary totals at the Highway Safety Division of the State Department of Public Safety. Drinking drivers accounted for 27 fewer fatalities. The extensive concern and publicity along with increased emphasis on driv-" ing under the influence by police agencies, agen-cies, prosecutors and courts probably account ac-count for this decline. With the legislature working on several law changes and continued increases in-creases in programs to deter drinking and driving, it is hoped that this decline will continue during 1983, said Utah Public Safety representatives. |
