First, select your fire site carefully. Pick an open spot away from tree trunks, overhanging limbs, and low shrubs. Clear all grass, leaves, and sticks in a six foot circle, using a shovel for best efficiency. Dig a shallow pit to further contain the campfire. Follow the old Indian practice of building a fire only as large as is necessary. A smaller fire is usually adequate and makes cooking much easier. Avoid moving burning logs except when necessary. At each shift, sparks soar upward in the wind and sometimes in the direction of waiting fuel nearby. Keep a bucket of water handy along with a green bough. The water will be useful for culinary purposes and readily at hand in case of an emergency. The bough can be used to beat out any small spark-cause- d fires that may start. After you have finished with your campfire, cover it with dirt, again using the shovel. Mix dirt and coals thoroughly, add more dirt. Now Rour o nthe water.
