KAY ii The causes of juvenile delinquency are probably as varied as the suggested remedies. I dont propose to have any solution for the problem but L rather suspect that what were doing to curb juvenile delinquency is not right. This is a foregone conclusion because everyone keeps saying that the crime rate among juveniles is on the increase. Im not so sure that this is altogether true either. When we were kids we werent much different than the kids of today. When we stole an apple from a neighbors tree, we were chastised sufficiently by either the neighbor or our father, or both. Today, when the very same thing happens, the police are called and we have another example of delinquetp behavior by a minor. Children are great imitators and they need attention. They emulate their elders as well as people of their own age. If they constantly read about juveniles in trouble, if they are continually exposed to the sordid characters that run rampant across the TV shows and if they see enough motion pictures depicting the unsavory aspect of life, I wonder if; we can blame them entirely for, trying to get attention 'by being- so called juvenile delinquents. I; rather think that a lot of our children become criminals because ip their young minds, its the criminals who get the attention from society. - Every once in a while the Ken-neco- tt Neighborhood Theater runs a short film on one of the local high schools, showing the accomplishments of their students. I think that this is a wonderful gesture and it would seem to me that if our young children saw more of this type of publicity, it just might be that they would try to imitate these people rather than the criminals. Cathy Giles, stake dance director, is in charge of the event. If our newspapers would spend more of their time in looking for the good in children and printing this information instead of dwelling on the other side of the picture, the effect on our children might be profound. If our children knew that they could get their name in the paper by joining the Boy Scouts, or by being an honor student in school, or by winning a foot race, it could be that more young people would work towards those ends. By the same token, if some of our young people realized that they would get no publicity whatsoever for any 4 4 4 4 wrong they have done, it might A record hop will be held for Pastor H. They must feel that if they do something wrong no one will let them forget it but if they do something right no one bothers to even mention it. Im not saying that this reversal of our present system is a cure-al- l but I know that the way were handling it is not right. And dont forget, the sins of our children are not all theirs.
