Honors expands student opportunities Keyra Kristoffersen News Writer Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.. Dr. Geoff Tabin, professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Utah and the John A. Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, will speak at Utah Valley State College. In addition, the inauguration of a new study area for honors students in the Losee Center called the "Study Commons" in LC 203 will officially open the new, expanded Honors Program at UVSC. The new program offers extended classes for all majors designed to help integrate and assist students in future academic endeavors, by offering undergraduate research opportunities with professors in need of research assistants and students trying to boost their resume. The expanded program offers honors students more scholarships, more choices in classes and activities, and opportunities for. undergraduate research and service. This last year, 30 scholarships were offered to incoming freshmen through the Honors Program. The original projection for the new program with new freshmen and returning students was thirty; however, ninety students have been accepted into the program, much to the program director's delight. "We are very pleased," said Joy Ross, director of UVSCs Honors Program. She said the new Honor's Colloquium is "intellectually stimulating and fun." The Honors Program began 22 years ago by history professor Dennis Farnsworth and has been building steam ever since, helping students earn four year degrees, and has helped to establish the school as competitive for students. The new Study Commons, or "Research Triangle," offers a quiet area for individuals and groups. The English department has even taken advantage of the space for their weekly Open Mic nights. "There is nothing like it on campus," said Ross, "We're lucky the dean made the space available." Tabin was the fourth person to climb the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on all seven continents, including the east face of Everest. He authored Blind Corner: Adventures are dressed professionally with resumes in hand— that's what employers are looking for," said Hart. "We want them to know not to show up in their jammies." Located in BA 133, Career Services is dedicated to helping students find a career. Whether students are looking for a part-time job through the UV Job Board or a post-graduate career, their job is to help students by offering career counseling and guidance. Career Services also offer mentoring programs to help coach and consult students in their career and skills development, and they offer advice on resume writing.
