Show PAIDAVERTISEMENT STUDENT GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTA ILITY Independent Branch new to ASUVSC Looking back and forward on events During the Fall 2006 semester ASUVSC has offered various engaging events on campus. We've been able to bring events such as the UVSC Talent Show, Outdoor Games, Rail Jam, and Battle of the Bands that focus on students' talents, hobbies, and interests, as well as being available for casual viewing by students that may not actually want to participate. Events open to community and their families, such as kid's nights, movie nights, and the hypnotist shows, have been presented. These events are geared towards students that have families or others they want to bring and are great for any age. Kid's Nights (Family Nights) are events that provide families with free food, activities, crafts, and handouts. These are a great op. portunity for students to be involved not only with the campus but with their family as well. Traditional activities like dances, Fear Factor, tailgate parties, etc. have also been held and have been very successful so far this year. Not only has ASUVSC been able to provide fun ways to relieve the stress of school to students they have been able to raise donations through the students to give back to our campus. Because the great support and attendance from students at events like the Welcome Back Dance and Thriller (Halloween Dance), $1 per head was given to the Fulton Challenge. These events take a lot of hard work, advanced planning, and dedication. We are very grateful for those that volunteer their time and effort to help make each of these events a success. ASUVSC currently consists of over 100 committee members who work hard to help plan, publicize, and implement the events. Additional things to look forward to throughout the year include: UV Unplugged (an acoustic showcase). Breakfast with Santa, Recycled Percussion, Miss UVSC Pageant, UV Idol, Pack Your Bags Dance, and much more!! Please let us know of ways we can better inform you and get you involved in the things we do! QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Marissa Neumann at neumanma@uvsc.edu. To the students of Utah Valley State College: A s your student body president, my executive team and I feel an obligation to report to you on the commitments and goals we were elected on. Last spring, when we asked for your support and vote, we selected certain issues to work on for your benefit. As we approach the halfway point of this academic year, I want to take the opportunity to share with you the progress we have made. During the election, we committed to work on three specific areas that we felt would benefit the students the most. The first of these was supporting the administration's goal of attaining university status; currently student government and other students are organizing and planning a student campaign to help in achieving this goal. This will include meetings with the Board of Regents, student rallies, and town hall meetings. I encourage you to participate in any way that you can. It is essential to our campaign that we have the students backing the move to university. Attaining University status will impact us when we apply for jobs or continue our education at graduate school. The second area of focus we committed to work on is to raise awareness of the state equity funding issue which has students at UVSC paying more than 12% more of the cost of their education when compared to other state-funded institutions. This is an inequity that must be addressed. We have raised this issue with the Legislature and our local lawmakers are trying to find ways to help. The Commissioner of Higher Education and Board of Regents recently approved an allocation of three million dollars to UVSC. This is a start in reducing this existing inequity, but an additional $7-$ 14 million is needed to bring UVSC in line with the other eight colleges and universities funded by the state. Our third area of focus bringing free wireless internet access available to students, several meetings have been held and we are continuing to look for sources of funding necessary that will make free wireless possible. The internet has become a very important part of our education and should be available to all students on campus. Everyone on campus deserves a huge THANK YOU for your support of the Fulton Challenge. At the beginning of the year the student council set a goal of $24,000 dollars to be raised by students for programs supported by the students, I am very excited to announce that the students at UVSC have reached and surpassed this goal. I am sure you remember seeing us in the halls and our collection jars around campus asking all students to donate $1, most students donated their dollar and many contributed much more. On October 27th we surpassed the goal of $24,000. Once that money is matched by the Fulton Family we will divide it up to benefit three important areas that were advertised as part of the collection campaign. The first will be to help contribute student money toward the effort to attain university status for UVSC. The second allocation will help in the construction of the new library. The state generously funded the entire library except the last $1.5 million, and with some of the Fulton Challenge money we will be able to contribute as students to a building that will positively affect all our educations. The third chunk of the collected funds will go to support students by providing scholarships. I can't thank the students enough for their support of the Fulton Challenge. In closing I want to extend an invitation to any student who has any concerns to come and talk to me in my office (SC105). I am happy to take time to discuss issues or concerns with you or to discuss what we as ASUVSC are doing for you. Also, I would invite you to take time to talk to student council members when we are in the halls asking for your input or opinions. We want to know what you want; and we are here to serve you. So please take a second to let us know what we can do for you. Thank you again for your support! Andrew Stone Student Body President **Go GREEN** QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Andrew Stone at stonead@uvsc.edu This semester the independent branch has been involved in some major events around campus. As an independent branch, which is fairly new to ASUVSC, we find new ways to involve students in political, governmental and civic opportunities. Two of theses major events this year include, but are not limited to; our voter registration project and also our Constitution day. Both events have been very well received by the student body and we feel have encouraged the students to be more civically, and politically minded. Early this year our Chief Justice Justin Davies, attended a special meeting organized by the lieutenant governor, Gary Herbert to encourage campuses state wide to get their students registered to vote. A friendly competition was set up to see which campus could register the most students to vote. Students who were previously registered were asked to sign a pledge to vote on voting day. Pledges were also accounted for in the competition. After months of hard work UVSC was declared winner and by no small margin might I add. Another opportunity that our branch was involved in was that of Constitution Day. Every college and University Campus is required by federal mandate to hold and promote Constitution Day. This year our Constitution Day was held on September 15. President Sederberg arranged a committee to head up the event and carry out all activities. Faculty members and students comprised the committee and put together one of the best/Constitution Days ever held. From the students' standpoint, one-thousand copies of the United States Constitution (pocket edition) were bought, along with one-thousand miniature American flags. Both Constitution and American flag were handed out to students in the halls around campus. Items were hot as within an hour all onethousand flags and Constitutions were handed out. This year, so far, has been a great one. Students have been duly informed of political and governmental issues and both efforts have been a major topic of success among students and the independent branch, QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Kris Coles at coleskr@uvsc.edu Upcoming events DECEMBER 9 JANUARY 17 FEBRUARY 7&8 Bring yourfamily and enjoy Breakfast with Santa on Dec 9 from 9-11 a.m in the Grande Ballroom.
