Show 184 STUDENT LIFE senior year there is but little chance Under such condifor electives tions the average students and indeed those above the average1 find their time all taken in preparing this work As a result we have no debating or literary societies On the other hand if more freedom were allowed students in their choice of work many that now find no time or perhaps no interest for the literary or debating society would elect a few hours of study that naturally would lead them into fields now unthought of Again our students do not seem to realize that there is anv benefit to be derived’ from general society work There is a sort of selfishness iii the departments themselves and a clannishness between departments that should not exist The agricultural students the engineers and commercials each have their club and feel that nothing is of benefit to them unless along their despecial line The meetings are voted principally to the discussion of special topics thus excluding such work as debating As long as this feeling exists we will find ourselves as we do at present in an embarrassing position when asked to take part in movements like the oratorical contest It is too late for us to do anythe thing this year but it should be stuaim of both authorities and dents to guard against the recurrence of our present condition Department Notes Domestic science aivl Arts To accommodate the visitors at the Farmers Convention held here last month a free lunch was served from a lunch counter in the armory The work was done by the students under the direction of the Domestic with Miss Science department Geneva Egbert in charge It is estimated that about one thousand persons were served The class in household economics has just finished a discussion of pictures in the home The matter of choice of pictures was treated very thoroughly which necessitated a brief but comprehensive study of great artists and their works Prof and Mrs Langton entertained at luncheon at the college dining room Saturday Feb 27 The guests were Mr and Mrs Guy Thatcher and Mr and Mrs V B Preston Prof Faris Mr Clear and Mr Caine of Idaho who visited the inof last stitution on the twenty-fift- h month were served with luncheon at the college The sight of a good meal will not always restore a man’s good humor even when he is the best of |
