remember in our thirty four years residence here of BO much sorrow in our little village for the same period and new year have been quiet on account of sickness and deatle several families aro at the present time afflicted with efforts are being made to check the spread of thia disease ADVICES from the sheep herds owned by parties of this town are very discouraging cou raging many of the animals have already died from starvation and the outlook is anything but flattering THE teachers of the ward havo organized a relief corps and the sick exve been greatly benefited while the unfortunate families feel very grateful for the help thus extended WE have added a vestry and belfry to our meetinghouse meeting house thia fall we have purchased a nice bell and its tones admonish us of our Os christmas day we buried stephen E martin son of jesse B martin of scipio millard county he was a young man much respected in the community QUITE a number of our farmers are feeding beef cattle as they find this business very profitable A LARGE amount of lucera hay is grown here and the entire crop fed out to stock at home was a total failure the last season and the loss thus sustained has been quite serious WK boast of having some very fino horses in this settlement I 1 scow is about ten inches deep and sleighing first class extremely cold W J S JAN manti OUR sheep men need not worry about the tariff on wool even if it should he taken off it will he a splendid business facts and figures are stubborn things here it is the common rule for parties who lease out sheep to receive one in increase for every five head the old stock to he kept good by the party who takes them or 20 per cent in heep per annum they also get one ani a half pounds of wool per head per annum with wool at 20 centa per pound and sheep at per head this makes 35 per cent per annum clear profit to the sheep owner besides what the party who took them had to have even at this tremendous per cent men who understood the business and attend to it in a few years have generally all the sheep they can attend to of own with wool at 10 centa and sheep at per head say five pounds per head for an ordinary flock there is still the Dutch mans 1 per cent if stockmen stoc kmen who ara being driven out of alie business by sheep had sent men to congress to lobby for their interests te rests it would have been more plausible As it is stockmen stoc kmen have sold out partly and in some cases wholly and bought sheep simply because sheep and cattle will not feed on the same range some persons might think I 1 did not like mutton it is very nice when you are not forced to eat it and drin k it too as we have had to do liere the last season in our ater which at times was unfit to drink from floods washing the sheep manure into our city crack A WELCOME harbinger of the ew year the youth lias become a man the territorial ENQUIRER was a welcome guest the UTAH ENQUIRER will become a general necessity to all those who are interested in the growth of utah THERE are only ono or two wells jn our city where are the enterprising well di agers all gone some man will make himself a name to be envied who will come here and drill a few flowing wells WE are having a very cold spell here so far the weather lias been uncommonly cold even for us with our altitude of feet TYPHOID fever and pneumonia have been very prevalent and unusually severe with many deaths STOCKMEN arc gathering their poor cattle on the ranges and feeding some others are doing well THOMAS are hauling some coal to manti from new mine ENQUIRER lias doubled such is life in JANUARY ath biyson Pi ON wednesday evening the ath a meeting was held in the central schoolhouse in the interest of education president cluff and professor talmace addressed the assembly their discourses wei p and yet sound reasoning often faila to entirely aradi caff from the blind old notions poeju dices and theories they cling to us still at the present time there is in my opinion no subject requiring more thought and prompt action than the of of the rising generation of the latter day the indications of the political horizon are to a thinking mind sufficient evidence of the vital importance of present preparation to meet coming developments ai rolla on ditl its event we rhall realize the unavoidable necessity of educating and preparing our own school teachers and our own schoolhouses thia people are now absolutely circumscribed in their educational matters A new and novel thing in this great republic i that teacher nor children shall not pray in their school houe that teachers ahall not talk t their of god or religion god and coipel is the foundation of true education tha fear of god i of wisdom MONDAY evening dencine parties were held in the city hall and baer house they had a lively tim vye like to see our young folks enjoy within th e bund of propriety but continuing these promiscuous parties until 3 or 4 ia the morning and than break up with the tune wont go home tin i morning is not healthy nor good for morals for young ladies it is imprudent and fuli I 1 am still ia favor ftc commencing our public parties much earlier and closing them at proper hours persons in the ballroom should gentlemanly and lady like decorum no smoking or intoxicating liquors should be allowed specially in mixed parties should young ladies spurn improper advances turn with disgust against sipping the cursed cup when coaxed by designing characters young ladies under all circumstances in life ba wise nd prudent guarding and preserving your chastity inviolate SOME are agitating the question of 1 curfew law about which there is a wide difference of opinion some think we have more law now than is enforce dand that a little good law judiciously administered is better than a of ordinances din ances without administration others think it would be a good idea to try the enforcement of the old laws on old offenders and their vices before making new laws and trying legislation we have enough of that kind of legislation in the present national persecution against this people in my judgment what alie curfew law aims to accomplish is in the province of parents and needs no special provision of law and is unconstitutional but of course this is for court IT is reported that the sales of intoxicating liquors last month by one of the saloons here amounted to over eleven hundred dollars and it is boasted that 90 per cent of this means came out of the pockets of this people this is building up and sustaining this hell sprawled ned traffic with vengence poor people to so willingly allow themselves to be duped and fleeced by a clas of indolent speculators the whisky evil is an ulcerous sore on our social system and should soon or late be dealt with as a most deadly disease ON monday evening jan 1888 a pleasant family and friendly sociable took place at tho residence of G W brewerton of this city about forty congenial friends sat down to a table richly spread with abundance of good things auer which songs recitations etc made the occasion all that could be desired it was a time of hearty
