Show MowdAy, My 2, 1988 CRONiclt Editor's reality skewed Editon I'm confused. If I understand Shauna Bona correctly, she's opposed to preserving the lives of unborn children, but finds it morally preferable to preserve the life of a scumbag who murdered millions of Jews ("Mercy is the best form of revenge " April 28). It will be a sad day when we start refusing to punish criminals (especially those of John Demjanjuk's kind) because their crimes "seem more like history than reality." It's even sadder that Bona, whom I suppose is reasonably intelligent, can't recognize the "reality" of the slaughter of 6 million innocent men, women and children. Perhaps Bona could enlighten us with her preferred, but unexplained, method of punishment that "best prevents recurrence of Nazi-typ- e atrocities." Deterrence is not the only factor involved in fixing a punishment. Like it or not, retribution is also a legitimate societal objective. I agree that the death of one Holocaust murderer will not pay for the murder of 6 million Jews, but it's surely a step in the right direction. If Bona really thinks she could offer her "solution" face-to-fa- to a Holocaust victim without appearing ce ridiculous, she's fooling herself. Demjanjuk deserves to die, and I'm one member of society who will view his death as fitting retribution and a giant step toward deterrence. Thank goodness the end of the year is almost here so the Chronicle can find a new editor in chief with a little better sense of reality. Daniel A. Jensen Law student Truth about Iran-Ira- q justice, the lack of which is so painfully felt by people in places like Afghanistan, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and in the Gulf war. The head of the government of Iraq, Saddam Jussein is war after falsely thinking responsible for the he could overcome the Iranian army and annex the southern h province of Khoozestan in a matter of hours. He has proven to be a man of no integrity, when he used nerve gas on his own people (in the Kurdish city' of Halabchah) after embracing the Iranian combatants. Have you ever wondered why none of the countries who so eagerly seek an end to this war have condemned these acts of aggression? Why Mr. Hunt? Why? The fact is so clear to everyone, even the organizers of the rally. If you haven't answered in a sorrowful yes, then why haven't you pressured your government to declare these facts, even by sending a letter. If a truth as clear as this is so shamelessly ignored, what kind of reaction do you expect from people you call "thugs?" Mr. Hunt, did you know that one of the speakers who spoke from the very same microphone you used is an avid supporter of a vicious leftist militia organization, with headquarters in Iraq? For your information, the head of this military organization is strengthening President Hussein to continue using chemical weapons "suicidal war." Don't you think it's ironic in the that at this moment this organization is calling for an end to the war? Yet another irony is that a Palestinian speaker demanded an immediate and unconditional end to the war, when, at that very moment, his own people were fighting with bare hands and getting killed in the streets oil-ric- so-call- ed war Paqe Seven of the West Bank and Gaza for justice in their land. Why have you closed your eyes to the other side of this issue, the Iranians living in their country? Why don't you feel their pain and feel "sick to your stomach" when they become victims of chemical warfare and still shout "peace, but justice first!"? I was standing at the rally, about ready to burst into tears when I saw the speakers come and go without giving the opponents a chance to cry out loud and to say: 'Those of you who are Iranians, Americans, listen. Open your eyes and realize what you are speaking of! Where were you eight years ago, when Saddam's army captured the ruined city of Khorram Shahr and turned it to a flat piece of annihilated Abadan and its oil refinery? Why didn't you call for peace at that time? Where were you when there was a rally against the use of chemical warfare held just two weeks before? Are you truly concerned about the lives of the people of Iran and Iraq?" We are in an era at which the need for justice is more and more recognized and spoken of. If you want peace, you have to meet those people's rightful demands. Fact of the matter is, Mr. Hunt, most Americans don't give a damn about the number of lives taken by this war, nor the economic damage the two countries are suffering. All they care is about their own interests. And frankly, I am not concerned with what this rally would do to the public opinion at the U. But I am concerned about expressing the truth, so those few left who truly care hear about the truth and make up their own minds. I was present at the rally, which took place on April 21, about this issue and was sponsored by a group of Iranians who falsely claimed to be representatives of Iranian students at the University of Utah.
