Roosevelt campus branching out to offer even more By Lczlee E. Whiting It's long been known for turning out school teachers, thanks to a strong elementary education curriculum and related degree offerings, but the Utah State University Uintah Basin branch campus finds itself facing a . growing demand to offer more business, English, natural resource and family and human development courses and degrees. And they are responding. We are really trying to strengthen our University Studies and associate degrees and have four areas which we are focusing on, related USU Uintah Basin branch campus director Guy Denton. Those areas include: 1) Family and Human Development - The branch campus is considering hiring an assistant professor to teach in that department to keep up with demand. 2) Natural Resources - USU Uintah Basin branch campus currently offers an associate degree in that area and wants to expand by working closely with the Logan campus to offer a bachelor's degree. - We want to strengthen our ability to offer elementary and secondary teaching certificates, said Denton, adding that the education department continues to have the most students. 4) Business Administration -Recruiting efforts are underway for a full-tiassistant professor who holds a PhD to help build the business department at the branch campus. In addition, the USU Uintah Basin branch campus is in the process of hiring an assistant professor for their English Department and is putting their feelers out for another assistant professor or lecturer to teach upper-levmath courses. The new professors should be on board in time for the 2000 2001 school year, said Denton. The branch campus is also working with the Duchesne County School District on a program that brings classroom aides up to a para professional status providing them with more teaching skills and eventually a better paycheck. Through the program, of wnich 30 credit hours are funded by the school district, a classroom aid has the opportunity to 3) Education el -- earn an associate degree or bachelor's degree. There's also good news for those who may be considering returning to school to receive an advanced degree. A tuition waiver program available through the local branch campus allows those seeking a master's degree to waive up to 10 percent of tuition in any master's program available through the Roosevelt and Vernal USU campuses. The arrangement is particularly beneficial for teachers who return to obtain a higher degree. USU Uintah Basin branch campus officials are also working with the Duchesne County School District on adding a Reading Endorsement certificate and English as a Secondary Adams Education Center.
