Show THE TWO MOSESES, KEARNS AND CANNON. Minneapolis, Minn.. Jan. 24, 190C. Editor Truth: In mnny of the eastern papers soon aftfir the November, Salt Lako Cltv election there anneared a special Thomas Kearns advertisement or boost. Here Is a short quotation from tho New York World of Nov. 19, the New York Herald of Nov. 19. the Now York Sun of Nov 19. tho Utica Saturday Globe of Nov. 25, hnd manv ether eastern papers. It reads as follows: "Tho man of tbo hour In Utah is Ex-Senator Thomas Kearns. who organized or-ganized tho "Amerlcnn" partv, nnd to whom the credit for tho victory Is duo. Mr. Kearns. a popular citizen, durlm his years of residence in tho state has become a hero. If a biblical simile may be applied to so mundane a a thing as n political fight. Utah Gentiles Gen-tiles regard tho former senator as a Moses, who has delivered tho people" from bondage." Tho nbovo political advertisement from tho Kearns bureau of publicity to boost the would bo "Bramblo bush" ruler In Utah caught tho Hon. Frank J. Cannon's eye, and ho exclnimed. like the little Indian "mo too." While Tom-mie Tom-mie wns working tho secular papers, Frnnklo has started a sactimonius llluminntion cf himself in the eastern east-ern religion papers. Hero is a sample sam-ple which appeared In the Christian Chris-tian Herald: "Thero has, however, arisen ono who will be to the Mormon people a leader If thov will allow themselves to bo saved. Senator Frank J. Cannon has been associated with the Mormon Church frcm childhood; ho is thoroughly thor-oughly converrant with Mormon history, his-tory, understandp perfectly ovcry peculiarity pe-culiarity of Morrnrn character. His position In the church was such that had ho laid prlrciple aside and worked for his cwn advancement, regardless of what became of tho people, his labors la-bors would hnve been light compared with what thoy now are; but ho Is working' for principle and Is willing to abide tin consequences. Ho is putting put-ting all cf his energies, all of his time, all rf his means, Into this campaign." Krs. Frederick Schoff is also boosting boost-ing Frankic. In her speeches and interview in-terview sho says, that ho is so good, eo rre, so noblo and affectionate and is ro like St. Stephen or Christ thai f) ho Is too good for this vllo earth and will soon bo a martyr nnd die tho death. Sister Schoff said In a special to the Salt Lake Herald, "When I said good-byo to tho senate (her dear Frankio J.), I had a feeling I should never see him again alive." Tho boosting of such men as Thomas KeTns and Frank J. Cannon in the oaEtern papers and their being endorsed en-dorsed by tho Ministerial association or their allies hurts Utah more than anything else. The people of tho east are waking up on the subject. They arc rapidly learning that the antl-Smoot antl-Smoot campaigners are nothing but v gang of grafters nnd avengers. Tho Pev. J. Wesley Hill, who with tho Pev. T. C. Illff and Rev. Duncan J. McMillan havo been so active In the eastern states slandering. Utah, has h'd thirty-eight charges made against him (Hill) to Dr. Chndwick, his presiding pre-siding elder. These charges embrace Immorality, lying, perjury, swindling, bribery, plagiarism and corrupt administration. admin-istration. They were made by Mr. William H. Miller, Philadelphia. Pa., November 22, 1905. The Rev. Wesley Hill is well known here In Minneapolis. Minneapo-lis. This pretending to publish a second sec-ond edition of Mcthodistlsm In the twin cities was a swlndlo and five distinct dis-tinct nnd separate charges were made against him for swindling. After tho long corrupt nnd damnable career of the Pev. J. Wesley Hill It is incredible incredi-ble that tho Methodists of Ogden would even consider changing tho name of their church to tho "Hill j Memorial," and for money at that, a ' paltry sum of ?1,000. It is equal to j saying that the teaching of Christ and j all his exampler have been replaced by tho name of J. Wesley Hill and 11,000. Naming churches after preachers who can successfully beg money for their erection is a curso to nny community. The name of tho Illff church In Salt Lako fairly smells In the nostrils of those who know tho Rev. T.C.Illff after whom It'was named. Last Sunday I heard tho Rov. Boise, a Methodist, of Benton, Illinois, preach a patriotic sermon. Ho said honesty, morality and temperance should bo tho principal qualification of a United States senator. Ho severely denounced de-nounced Senators Depow and Piatt of New York state and said they lacked "11 of tho above qualifications. Tho Ministerial association of Salt Lako ! City get up petitions and send I out lying lecturers nnd reports ( against Sonntor Smoot, who is honest, I moral and temperate, to injuro Utah, because his brand of religion does not suit them. They thus become traitors to Article VI of tho Contsitutlon of the United States by trying to require of Senator Smoot a religious qualification qualifi-cation to hold his seat In tho senate. Mr. E. J. Westlake of this city left on January 20th for Salt Lako City as a delegate to "See America First" convention. con-vention. Mr. Westlake is secretary of the Commercial club hero. After visiting vis-iting Salt Lako ho will bo ablo to refute re-fute tho gross slanders Marlon Bon-spII Bon-spII has heaped upon Utah in a cheap Minneapolis monthly. I havo not visited vis-ited a city but what tho newspapers In it wero willing to publish extracts from my. booklet "Thirteen Thousand Dollars Reward," and it is certainly putting Utah right' In tho eyes of tho people. Tho editor of tho Minneapolis Journal Is well acquainted with J. Wesley Hill, T. C. Illff and Brother Wlshard, and ho thought It was high timo for the people of Utah to wake up and refute their slanders. If the Commercial club and the Manufacturers Manufactur-ers and Merchants' association of Salt Lako City will appoint commlt- tees to look Into the secret slanders and devilfish literature that is being sent out by the Ministerial association to injure Utah and keep out capital, settlers and tourists, and then without fear or favor publish their reports to tho world they will do more to advertise adver-tise Utah and put it right than any P' method they have yet employed. As long as Salt Lake has such dealers In slanders, falsehoods and scurlllty as tho Gentile Bureau of Information and tho Salt Lako Tribune the people should rise up against them as thev would agiinst a gang of thugs, pickpockets pick-pockets and thieves. Yours truly, V. S. PEET. |
