How's that supposed to play out in court? Apparently, some of the nation's top Christian moralists, theology and ethics professors and scholars, etc., have decided the Prez is some kind of manipulator. In an ongoing meeting, ISO of these national figures have taken the time to analyze some of the favorite dance steps used by Slick state-of-the-a- superficial but convincing platitudes of for the ben- Willy in his efforts to avoid efit of the preachers and rabbis impeachment They have, reported- whom he had invited to attend, is " ly, written some rather harsh soul-searchi- lan-no- w being analyzed as and manipulative.' One of the convincing arguments for this premise is that Clinton left that breakfast meeting (after baring just his soul, this time) and forthwith ordered his considerable cadre of lawyers to commence a very "vigorous defense, and to "fight tooth and toenail against further congressional probing." Hardly the behavior of a truly repentant, contrite, remorseful person, of which he tried to portray himself as being, at the breakfast. To further complicate the matter, on December 11th, in the Rose Garden, he again expressed (the crafty devil), his deep regret at having "misled the American people self-servi- about his affair with Monica Lewinsky. But he stated he would to accept a censure from Congress. Imagine that. I'm not familiar with specifics where a miscreant gets to name his own punishment. Its like. "So I robbed the bank and you caught me with a sack full of money, well yeah - I'd be willing to skip a meal or two...or That is, if you'll do a few push-up- s just kinda forget the whole thing and then.. .you know, back to busi- - be "willing guage about it and have published their opinions. An article in the Salt Lake Tribune states one of their comments, "We believe that serious misunderstandings of repentance and forgiveness are being exploited for political advantage... It appears as if Mr. Clinton is not only guilty of this obvious bit of dodishness, but has offered himself as a shining example to his minions who emulate his behavior and are imitating his adept usage of his astoundingly creative, misleading statements. On Sunday's, This Week, TV report, Mike Wallace made a good point when he posed the question, "If lying to the grand jury, which is a criminal offense - as over ISO people are now serving time in federal institutions for doing just that -is not an impeachable offense, then what is? He continued, " I know an employee (and he gave her name, which I was unable to hear clearly enough to write down) who was convicted of perjuring herself to a grand jury, and still has 13 months of her sentence to serve. It appears to me that if the President is not removed from office for his criminal offense - and remember the House voted for two articles of impeachment, not one -then they should certainly have to issue a full pardon for her, and for, perhaps, each one of the other ISO persons still in prison for the same crime. If Mr Wallace is correct in his assumptions (and it seems to me that he is) what, then, will transpire in virtually every court case where witnesses do not testify truthfully? Will it ever again be feasible for any witness to refrain from lying under oath? Or more to the point, will any potential law suit ever see the inside of the courtroom again, if there is no penalty for lying and no advantage in being truthful? This ridiculous scenario becomes confounded further by the fact that any farcical, incomplete repentance would automatically espouse lying and worsen to an unpredictable degree when it is politically motivated, as seems to be the Presidents case. If it is done in an effort to avoid the consequences for and the person doing wrong-doinit (in this case the President of the United States) has no conscience and displays no apparent sense of shame and, in fact, through Example, encourages others to imitate his g, behavior, then society digresses from a democracy to a dictatorship where there is no need for a legal code - no use for court rooms. Law and order is sacrificed, as is demde-rac- none-the-les- on-th- at by Jan befits the complete collapsb of human values. Thought for the day: i "Why tell me that a man is fine speaker if it is not the truth that he is speaking?" William Carlyle Pams Place I really don't know about the rest of you, but I am sure enjoying the warm temperatures. Although it is a bit nippy at times-- it is still nice outside. The ice forming on the reservoirs are a sure testament s, its still that winter is definitely here, but, ' neat pretty Watching the news on the television and reading about the events occurring back East with the snow and ice. makes me even more grateful that we have been so some to miss of that here. (Now watch, we will get it bad and everylucky one will blame me)!!!! This past week, on New Years' Day in fact, one of my sweet little grandsons turned a big number one years old. Kyle is such a sweet little guy and it was neat to wish him well with many more to come . He has certainly brought a lot of love, joy and happiness into our family. Children can really give you a reality check sometimes-- I mean, here it was his birthday, and his desires in life were so simple...Food, clothing, dry diaper and lots of love. Guess our basic needs never really change in life (well, maybe the diaper part, but no ones likes to be in the same clothes all the lime). Recently, I read a story that pointed out that love and touch are so important to people. In the stray, a man who was dirty, unshaven and terribly obese entered a hospital emergency room. The nurses were ready to argue over just whose "turn it was to help him, when the head nurse gently said "this one is mine. The nurse then proceeded to bathe him, shave him, rub him with lotion and powder while talking to him the entire time. When she was done, the man, with tears running down his cheeks, looked into her eyes and simply said "Thank you-N- o one has touched me for years. Imagine the impact this act of kindness did fra the man. One of my daughters-in-la- w could tell I was experiencing a rather difficult day recently, and soon handed me a little book to read. The title was "You Are Special" written by Max Lucado. As far as I am concerned, every home should have this book in'iL The story tells about a village in which a wood-carve- r carves out people and others in the village hand out either stars or dots --depending on how good someone does something or how bad they do. The little person in the story ends up with so many dots, he can barely stand. He comes across a person to whom neither the stars or dots will stick keep falling off. She tells him to go talk with the wood-carve- r, which he does. He simply tells the little guy that "I am the one who made you-whthe others think shouldn't matter." Just Stuff y. In fact, there is little use for anything but a return to the law of the jungle, survival of the fittest- - as WOW! how true...We are all special individuals-eac- h unique in our own way. There are no two people really alike, but' everyone has something of value to contribute to the world. Every once in a while, someone comes along in our lives to sort "shake things up. Whoever penned the saying "sticks and stones may tf break my bones but .words will The new year stretches before us, a chapter yet to be written, the pages still blank. Who knows what 1999 holds in store. We may see the second president in the history of our nation be removed from office and we'll get a new president without it even being an election year. Or, we may see just what is meant by censure We may find ourselves at war with Iraq. Or on the verge of vrorid peace. Will interest rates drop further? And what might happen on Wall Street? More ups and downs, or will it level off? Will we sec the same strange weather going from mid-5to below zero in less than 10 days and -t0s hen back up just as quickly? Early in the fall, the news reports had us worrying about what a harsh winter we might have. Now we're worried about not enough snow pack. What will the summer bring? Will we see sand bogs and a river down Salt Lake's State Street or will we have our water rationed and our yards bum brown in the sun? Flood or drought? Who knows. never hurt me, in my opinion, was ever so wrong. They really can penetrate the thin area that some people carry around on their shoulders. We never really know what burdens. person is carrying around with them, or what their particular lives are like behind closed doors. Because I have been personally injured by the words or actions of a few people in my life, it has made me even more aware of just how important it is to be "on our best behavior. 1 am certainly not pcrfcct-i- n fact I am a long way from that state, but this year I want to work harder on my ATTITUDE toward people and life in general. One big thing I have learned is that it is usually better to talk to the person who we have problems with-maythey don't even really realize what they said or did. Well, enough of all that Moving right along, I want to wish my youngest son, Ryland, a very Happy Birthday on January 14th. It will be his big 16. Oh Boy!! Drivers License Time: It really is strange how when the children are little, parents kinda wish for the years to hurry, then, once again reality hits, as they hit the teen-ag- e years and "another person" arrives in their bodies. I am totally convinced that this really does happen. if he is a real tease Ryland has really been a great joy to our family-eve- n and loves to hide and scare people when you least expect it. It has been fun to get to know him and his likes and dislikes and his own personality. I am grateful fra the many things he has taught me through his example. Community Action Services Firearms Don't Belong Near Homes t Dear Editor, I asked a Summit County Deputy Sheriff the other day what the laws are regarding discharging firearms. He said that it is illegal to shoot a gun within 500 feet of a road or subdivision: otherwise there are no other laws. Kamas Coalville, UT 84017 85 S. Main, Kama, P.O. Following are extracts of phat I found: Summit County Ordinance 137 forbids hunting or discharging a firearm within 500 feet of any subdivision or summer home or dwelling; from, upon or across any public roadway. forbids discharging any kind of weapon or Utah State Law firearm from an automobile or other vehicle; from, upon or across any highway; within 600 feet of a house, dwelling, or any other building; in 600 feet of any structure in which a domestic animal is kept or fed, including a bam, poultry yard, corral, feeding pen, or stockyard without written permission of the owner or person in charge. It is illegal to discharge a firearm in the direction of any person, knowing or believing that any person may be endangered. . Having come within 12 inches of being hit by a bullet at my home during a past hunting season, I become uneasy now when I see people shootwhich are only 2,000 ing rifles and shotguns between my home and feet apart. There are so many people moving in to Eastern Summit County that I think a realistic shooting distance from ones' home should be at least one mile. I hope our State Legislators will take action before someone is killed. , t Wayne Healey 17 South Main DEADLINES Letters to the Editor Thanks Extended We have no crystal ball, no way Of knowing what may lay ahead. And that unknown, in part, is what is so exciting about a new year. It's up to us to write the chapter and watch the new year unfold.
