X'X'J uninii '" '""j x DUP Camp Cottonwood The 6th graders from Mrs. Andersen's class at Mapleton Elementary learned what it takes to be a good scientist by coming up with a hypothesis and developing an experiment for growing mold. The class was so amazed by the different results that they held a MOLD Universe pageant. Each entry came with a name and a written explanation of their future asperations. Megan Dennis' mold wants to go on to take over a family business of the bacteria bottling company. Beautimold Buddy, Morgan Schramm's entry, took grand prize of Mold Universe. Judy Eisner The Cottonwood Camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers met September 14, at the home of Marion Tip-petts. Tip-petts. Co-hostess for the first meeting of the 2006-2007 year was Phyllis Condie. Guests Donna Robertson and Sandy Allison were welcomed and expressed an interest in joining the camp. New members and visitors are always welcome. Eighteen Eigh-teen members and visitors were present. "The Cottonwood Camp Song," written by Alice Sedweeks, was sung after the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag was given. Pioneer stories of multiple events happening in Spring-ville Spring-ville were reported by Phyllis Phyl-lis Condie. It was interesting to note that in Springville in 1902, the first telephones consisted of four resident phones, six business phones with two operators. It was said, "If you want to keep anything a secret, don't say it over the phone." The camp's participation in the Birthday celebration of Springville and Museum Recognition Day were then discussed. Donna Packard was thanked for donating a quilt top to benefit the DUP orga-nizatioa orga-nizatioa Cathie Erickson will now take care of the scrapbook for the camp. Martha Browning Smith Heggie's pioneer history was told by Deon Hitchock. Martha was born in Scotland Scot-land and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley with the Apple-ton Apple-ton Company in 1853 at the age of 12. She married John Grant Heggie in 1860 and had fifteen children. Deon's great-grandfather was her tenth child. Her family settled set-tled in the Tooele area. After singing the Nevada State Song, the lesson on "Early Colonizers of Southern South-ern Nevada Settlements" was given by llene Coff-man. Coff-man.
