Phillips Couple Observes 60th Wedding Day 1 Married longer than the lifetime of many individuals, Mr. and Mrs. Gomer W. Phillips, well known citizens of Springville, Sunday observed the 60th anniversary of their marriage. They are the longest married couple in Spring ville, and one of the longest wed in the county. A reception had been planned in their honor, hut due to the recent illness and death of their son Louis, the reception recep-tion was cancelled and the occasion was observed quietly by the family. Mr. Phillip s was born on January 10. 1866. in SP rmg-ville, rmg-ville, and has made his home here throughout his life. He is much younger physically and mentally than his 83 years and continues to spend much time at the Phillips Garage. He endured the hardships of early pioneer life and as a very young boy helped to make a living for the family. With his brother Jonah, he cut and hauled timbers from ihe mountains, and while engaged in this work, he had many interesting experiences with the Indians. Mr. Phill ps worked as a blacksmith during construction construc-tion of the Pleasant Valley railroad, and upon completion of .the work went into business for himself and worked for 60 years as a blacksmith. His memory is very keen and he relates many interesting happenings of early days in connection con-nection with the settlement of Springville. Mrs. Phillips was born in Spanish Fork, September 6, 1866, and spent her girlhood on a farm assisting her father with his dairy and apiary. She recalls the price of butter was 10 cents per pound. Her father's herd of Jerseys was considered the finest in the state. Before her marriage, Mrs. Phillips came to Springville arid worked as an apprentice in Mary Ann Bissell's dressmaking dress-making shop. It was at this time she met and married Mr. Phillips. The couple are parents of ten sons and daughters, seven of whom are living. They are: Mrs. Ruth Lambson, of Helper; Mrs. Alta Robertson, of Salt Lake City; William Wil-liam J., Earl-S., Ernest, Theo and Thomas Phillips, all of Springville. They also have' 12 grandchidren and six great grandchildren. |
