Show Three Children Die In Tragedy Here Deaths Caused By Gas Fumes From Kitchen Range Oven . Eddie and Donna Curtis, Only Children of Mr. I and Mrs. Don Curtis; Geneil Bird, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Bird, Lose Lives in Accident Tragedy struck simultaneously in two Springville ' homes Tuesday night when three children died as the result of gas fumes escaping while they slept in a hasement apart- ment at Vb west, second soutn St. Geneil Bird, 10, daughter of Loyd and Marjorie Parker Bird, Eddie Curtis, one and a half years, and Donna Curtis, 5, children of Don and Goldie Harris Curtis, were pronounced dead shortly after af-ter midnight, after firemen from Springville and Provo had worked more than an hour with no results. It is believed the gas on the oven in the kitchen of the two-room apartment was accidentally turned on before the children retired. When the parents of the two smaller children returned home from a picture show about 11 p. m., they found the baby son in the crib; the little girl on the bed and Geneil on the floor. It was believed be-lieved Geneil might have attempted attempt-ed to reach a window. When the parents opened the door, the tragic scene confronted them. They carried the children upstairs and summoned Dr. G. B. Orton, Dr. C. W. Judd and Dr. C. A. King, and the parents of Geneil. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Gore, in their home upstairs, said they heard the children playing about 9:30 p. m., but they did not detect the gas fumes until the parents opened the door upon their return home. The two rooms were closed tightly. Attending physicians said the children could have been dead for an hour before being discovered. Geneil Bird was born in Springville Spring-ville October 13, 1936 and was a student in the Lincoln high school. She was enrolled in the Sunday School and Primary organizations !of the Third ward. Surviving her are her parents, a sister, Mrs. LaRee Peterson; two brothers, Billie and Raymond Bird, all of Springville; grandparents, Mrs. May Bird and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Parker, all of Salt Lake City. Donna Curtis was born on October Octo-ber 11, 1942, in Stockton, Calif., while the brother, Eddie, was born September 6, 1945, at Venice, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis have lived in the Gore apartment less than a year. Surviving the children, besides their parents, are the grandparents, grandpar-ents, Edward J. Curtis, Springville, and Mrs. C. J. Brown, Freemont, Nebr. The bodies of the Curtis children are at the Claudin Funeral Home Funeral services for Geneil are set for Saturday at 2p . m., in the Third ward chapel. Friends may call at the family residence before be-fore the services. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery, directed by A. Y. Wheeler Wheel-er and Son mortuary. |
