The tragic realitjr of the war was brought closer to this community com-munity Sunday, wh-.en word was received of the deatli of Lt. Gene E. Bird, son of Pcistmaster and Mrs. J. Emmett Biisd. The telegram, rec e ived from the war department, kitated briefly that Lt. Bird died in:'j Asia, November Novem-ber 29, and a letter would follow, giving details. Lt. Bird left for (- overseas duty the latter part of (October. The first news after hits leaving was from central Af rici i , stating that he was well and "h ad completed half of his journey. It is, therefore, there-fore, assumed that j he may have been in Indo-China..i Lt. Bird was born J in Springville, July 31, 1921, and u pon graduation from the local hi gl.i school, entered en-tered the Brigham "jToung university. univer-sity. While in colle ia?e, he obtained his C. A. A. pilot's " license. He joined the lo al unit of the National Guard in 1940, and left with the unit for tj-aining at San Luis Obispo, Calif, t, in March of. 1941. The following 1 year, he joined the air corps and s tj bsequently received re-ceived training at ! 3 anta Ana, He-mit He-mit and Bakersfi ;ld, Calif. In February, he was c Dmmissioned a second lieutenant a i id received his pilot's wings at Do t iglas, Arizona. He later received a,( Ivanced training train-ing at Alpena, Michi; , Denver, Col., Salt Lake City, R e no, Nev., and then at Miami, Fla. j He was a pilot on the largest type of cargo plane. Lt. Bird married I Ha Nan Clyde, daughter of Mr. a) m i Mrs. W. W. Clyde, on May 7, 1 B' 13, in the Salt Lake temple.
