Show SPANISH FORK 19 Return of the Car Show Jeril Bills STAFF W R I T E R After several years of dormancy, the Fiesta Days Car Show is back this year, thanks to Mike Nielsen. When Nielsen, the owner of Mike's One Man Band on Main Street, went to the city last year for permits to hold a monthly car show at his business, he was denied a permit for July, since the dale he'd planned for his "Cruise Night'1 fell during Fiesta Days. However, city officials suggested he do a sort o\' Fiesta Days Car Show, so he did. He threw the event together in two weeks, with enormous support from local businesses, and a strong turnout of 88 car entries. According to Nielsen, the event was a precursor, "to see if we could try to get the car shows coming back to Spanish Fork." Because of last year's success, as well as demand from the community, Nielsen and the Fiesta Days committee are now officially resurrecting the Fiesta Days Car Show. Nielsen expects at least 150 entries for this year's show, and maybe even more. He also expects a large spectator turnout. "We'll have thousands of people coming in and out," said Nielsen. He also said, 'There's a lot of people, whether they have a show car or not. that really really have an interest in coming, looking, and taking [part in) a car show. I mean, I really think that this is gonna be a big success." Nielsen, who considers himself a big supporter of the Spanish Fork Chamber of Commerce's "shop local" campaign, is looking exclusively to Spanish Fork businesses to provide the t-shirts, trophies, prizes and other items necessary for the event. "These people are investing in something that's good for Spanish Fork." said Nielsen. He later added,"I think that money ought to stay right here in Spanish Fork." Awards w: II be given in over 20 categories, and there w II be coveted overall prizes like Best of Show, voted on bv show participants; People's Choice, voted on by visitors to the show; and something akin to a Mayor's Choice award, in which the mayor, a city councilperson, or a member of the Fiesta Day's committee will select the car he or she thinks is the best overall. If the quality of the cars displayed at Cruise Night is any indication, the Fiesta Days Car Show should be pretty impressive. "We really gel some really fine cars here, I mean, just amazing," said Nielsen of Cruise Night. The car show will be held on Saturday, July 25. at City Park by the library. Registration is from 8-10 a.m., and a benefit breakfast for the Spanish Fork City Volunteer Ambulance and the Volunteer Fire Department will also be served during that time. The shosv itself runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Awards and prizes will be announced starting at 3 p.m. Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News CLASSIC: The Fiesta Days Car Show promises something for everyone — young and old alike. |
