Jodi Mantilla, fifth-grade teacher at Larsen Elementary, received a grant from the Nebo Education Foundation for technology in the classroom. Kristi Jensen, special education teacher, also received a grant to purchase books for reluctant readers. Ms. Mantilla said, "One of the first uses of the camera and projector will be sharing student magazines. We are currently writing fractured fairytale magazines in our class, and my students are excited to share their magazines with their peers. In addition to sharing the students' work, the technology will help with writing instruction, math and science. I am really excited about receiving this technology for my classroom and firmly believe that students will respond positively to this technology. It will enhance their learning and understanding." Ms. Jensen, special education teacher, exclaimed, "I am so thrilled to be able to purchase these books. I teach reluctant readers and think that they will eagerly look forward to the 'new and different' books that will be put out with each holiday. I hope that these books will pique more of an interest in books and subsequently learn to love reading as much as I do! Thanks so much for providing this opportunity." It has been a privilege to participate with Nebo Education the Foundation for many years and be a part of the growth that has occurred. Several years ago we had little money to award grants to teachers. Now, through the generosity of the businesses and communities, we are in a position to help teachers better do their jobs. We are so fortunate to have so many dedicated teachers who are always looking for ways to improve their effectiveness," stated Gayle Gammell, foundation treasurer. These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. The foundation wants to thank all those who participated in the Sixth-annual "Green Fever" golf tournament this past month. The proceeds from the tournament fund grants such as this one. Not only did they learn the elements of dance, but also the science core objectives of conduction, convection and radiation. The beach balls served as props, depicting atom movement through heat transfer. The sixth-grade students will be performing their dance at the culminating arts assembly at the end of May. These activities are a culmination Mrs. Burton's, Mrs. Thomas' and Mrs. Jorgensen's goal of using integration of the arts for instruction. Teachers participated in the Nebo Arts Academy training throughout the school year and summer. Graduation from Arts Academy is June 1, 2009.
