SF track goes to region ;• ; Dave Boyack STAFF WRITER .; Spanish Fork High * School track and field teams had a successful completion to the regular track season, finishing third and fourth at the region track championships held at Timpanogos High School. Leading the '.'way for the Dons were re' gion champions Erin Redd . in the javelin, David Nester >in the 800 meter run (num'<ber one ranked in 5A) and Brandon Poulter in the 400 meter dash. Brandon's time , ;of 50.47 ranks as a top 5 state time. Also winning region titles were the boys medley relay team of Max Livingston, Tyler Hull, Justin Crandall and David Nester. -rThe boys 4x400 meter relay ;Ueam also came away with ;!a region title. Members of 'Ithat team were Justin Cran- dall, Brent Strong, Brandon Poulter and David Nester. This group currently has the 4th fastest 5A time in the state this year. Winning a second place silver medal was Parker Cressman in the high jump. Third place bronze medal winners for the Dons were Luke Besendoifer in the discus, Uili Makai in the shot put, Jenn Huntsman in the 100m hurdles, Jenn Youd in the 400m dash. Spencer Hanson in the 3200m run, Kaitlyn Urmston in the shot put, the girls 4x400m relay team of Britney Jones, Jenn Huntsman, Jessi Anderson and Jenn Youd. Finishing fourth (top four finishes qualify for state) were the girls 4x100m relay team of Xihdsey DeLeo, Jenn Youd, Jenn Huntsman and Jessie Anderson. Also making the state team was Kaitlyn Urmston in the discus, and Erin Redd in the long jump and high jump. Erin Redd's performance at region was impressive, considering she qualified for state in three different events while placing in four. Others who made the award podium (top six) were Nate Russell, 6th in the 110m hurdles; Kyler Gilstrap in the javelin; Justin Crandall, 5th in the 400m; Jenn Huntsman, 6th in the 300m hurdles; Jenn Youd, 5th in the 200m dash; Nola Iketau, 6th in the shot put; Kaitlyn Urmston, 6th in the javelin throw; Brandon Poulter, 5th in the 200m dash; and Kaitlyn Urmston, 5th in the discus. Spanish" Fork qualified 17 total athletes for the state meet to be held at BYU, May 15-16. Samantha Beck / Spanish Fork News REGION 8 TRACK: Salem Hills hosted the Region 8 track meet Thursday, May 7. The Skyhawks took third place overall in the girls standings and second in the boys. The top contender for SHHS was Tucker Pinder, who won both the 300m hurdles and the 800m run. Pinder also participated on the first place 4x400 team, along with Blake Adams, Josh Adams and Jason Anderson, and the first place 1600m sprint medley team, along with Blake Adams, Billy Fairbanks and Jace Spencer. Jake Skinner won the long jump, with a leap of 19'4" and took second in the boys 110m hurdles. Distance specialist Tyler Gebert finished first in both the 1600m and the 3200m. On the girls' side, Margo Brockbank took third in the 800m run and Cosette Stone took third in the 1600m and 3200m. The team of Jo Julian, Storie Brockbank, Natalie McVey and Margo Brockbank took second in the 1600m sprint medley, and Julian placed second in the girls long jump, with 16' 1/2". SH Softball SF Golf Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News LADY DONS: The Lady Dons golf team, back row, left to right, are Kelsey Briggs, McKenzie Beckstrom, LaShae Petersen, Kaley Thomas and Kaylee Beckstrom; front row, Coach Aaron Brown, Karlie Abplanalp, Aubrey Palfreyman and Coach Tim Braithwaite. The team finished fourth in Region 4 and will go to the 5A state tournament Thursday, May 14 at Glen Eagle in Syracuse. SF softball: From LADY DONS • A12 eight. The Dons wasted no time jumping on Timpanogos, scoring three runs in the first, which was more than junior Dezlee Roberts would need, Span- ish Fork cruised to a 11-0 victory in just five innings. Offensively, the Dons were let by Tina Ferguson, who went 3-4- and scored two runs, while Kylee Bufton was 2-2 with £ home run. scored twice and drove in two. Katelyn Elliott also had a good game at the plate, driving in two RBI's and scoring two runs herself. The Dons defensively were solid as Timpanogos sent the minimum 12 batters to the plate in the first four innings. They managed to get two runners on in the fifth on a lead- Allison Phillips / Spanish Fork News LAST HOME GAME: Salem took on Carbon for their final regular season game, Tuesday, May 5, 2009. The Skyhawks gradually worked up to a 3-0 lead before opening things up 4-1 in the fifth. They got three more runs in the sixth to seal the deal, winning 10-3. Alyssa Anhder was the winning pitcher. Salem's Ashley Shepherd, above, went three-for-three including a home run. SAM'S PREP OF THE WEEK off walk and single before Roberts induced a ground ball and struck out the final two batters to end the game. Timpanogos had no answer for Roberts as she struck out nine of the 15 recorded outs to pick up the victory and gave up just a single hit in the fifth. Spanish Fork's next game will be in the opening round of the state tournament as they host Brighton High School, Tuesday, May 12 at the Sports Park. Finishing first in their region will also guarantee a second round home game on Thursday, May 14. t Kylee Bufton • Senior • Softball • Right Field Senior Kylee Bufton made the most of her last regular-season game as a Lady Don. Spanish Fork traveled to Orem to take on Timpanogos Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Bufton went 2-2 at the plate, including a home run. She scored twice and had 2 RBI.
