Show Guardian of Your Community Neivs cho WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2009 • B l Red Ribbon Week at MMHS The PTA at MMHS would like to invite the public to attend a Red Ribbon Drug Prevention Night at Maple Mountain High School on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. This year Springville High and Maple Mountain High are combining for their 13th annual Red Ribbon Night sponsored by the PTA. Students junior high age and older and their parents are invited. We also encourage youth and scouting groups to attend. The speakers will be Lt. Brandon Anderson and Detective Lance Rudd from the Spanish Fork Police Department, who have extensive experience in this area. Drug and alcohol abuse issues affect many in Utah Valley. It is important to become aware and educated about the drug issues confronting our children and others in our families, neighborhoods and . churches. Young parents especially need to become educated before their children become teenagers. PTA encourages you to find a way to fit this important meeting into your busy schedule this year! Breaking barriers at LHS Trevor Bradford and Chelsea Chtarson LHS On Tuesday Sept. 29, 2009, Landmark High School held their annual Mix-it-Up assembly. The assembly was meant for breaking down the bricks and getting rid of cliques in schools. During the assembly, Principal Joe Kelly showed the students an example on using your inner strength and your inner power to break the bricks. Kelly, a thirddegree black belt, put down four bricks and told everyone how he had only broken three before, never four. Kelly gave an amazing speech on the power you have and how you can do anything you put your mind to. He then walked over to the bricks, as the audience went quiet. He was concentrating hard, and he finally swung his arm at the bricks and broke all four of them. The whole school cheered for him. It showed how much power one individual person can have. Kelly is trying to inspire each and every student to break their "bricks" through education and inner strength. To break the bricks students must have faith in themselves and know they can do anything they put their mind to. It's also important to not be afraid to make a leap for your goals. Find your inner strength and show the world that you are strong. SHDebate The intern spotlight of the week is Alex Singerman, who interns at Brockbank Elementary. She helps Mrs. Creer with her third-grade class. Singerman helps teach the kids and learns from Mrs. Creer. She also helps with all the third grade classes by cutting and sorting papers for the different teachers. She even gets to play with the kids at recess. "I'm totally the jump rope champion!" she said. Singerman learns a lot from Mrs. Creer and she enjoys her time as an intern. "I love it! It reinforces Alex Singerman my plans to be a teacher. I'm so excited to help and teach kids. I think teachers make a big difference in society," she said. Singerman is planning to be an elementary teacher when she grows up.
